Re: How to migrate mail into Kmail

On Friday 07 November 2025 04:01:50 Leslie Turriff wrote: I copied kmailrc, kmail.eventrc and kmailsnippertrc from a backup to my current .trinity/share/config/ (there was no kmail2rc) and restarted kmail, but I still see only the base folders (inbox, outbox, sent-mail, trash, drafts, templates) even though, when viewing kmailrc, the filters are all present. (See the attached image.) Why don't they appear in the Folder list? How can I fix this? Leslie I wonder if your problem is not that kmail "trashed" your filters but that it somehow ignores kmailrc (I don't know why however). In your OP you said "once again", but I never in over 20 years had kmail do something like that, so it seems directly linked to your settings. I haven't used SUSE in the last years (I used it when it was SuSE) so it's difficult to guess what it could be. We need someone with a deeper understanding of kmail works. I've been moving kmail's files between machines several time and ever only had to recreate the indexes and re-enter some passwords. Thierry Thierry, Thank you for your help with this. I have managed to get my filters working again; the only things missing now are my toolbar icons, which issue I will pursue in a new thread. How to migrate mail into Kmail
by Leslie Turriff 07 Nov '25

07 Nov '25

Once again, Kmail has trashed the filters that route mail into my subfolders. Is it safe for me to copy the list from an old copy, or will that mess up kmailrc? I can once again recreate the 178 filters manually, but that takes a long time and introduces errors. Can KMail display server certificates
by Mike Bird 03 Nov '25

03 Nov '25

If a pop3 or imap SSL certificate fails (e.g. expired) KMail displays the certificate details. Is there a way for KMail to display such details for a valid certificate, e.g. to determine if expiration is close. I'm not saying that KMail should have such a feature. But if it has such a feature it would helpful to know about it as I could have used it when debugging a problem last night. Thanks, --Mike

Hi all! I just finished uploading the latest version of "darkness". Biggest changes: - TDE 14.2-DEVELOPMENT - Xlibre instaed of Xorg - new background images - kernel 6.16.8 - own repository for darkness-specific packages (ATM a package for the repo and the wallpapers) Issues solved: - EFI installation on blank disk works now - TDE language packs of unused languages are removed when booting from iso, so that translations of missing texts come from english and not from any other language pack. - Crashes on Intel GM965/GL960 (Lenovo X61) Download (I got myself a bigger webspace): - https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928.iso - https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928.iso.sha256 Some Images: https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928-0.png https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928-1.png https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928-2.png https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928-3.png All the new wallpapers: https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20250928-wallpapers.png Please feel free to download and try .. and post your experience ;) Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Monitor Standby broken
by CHRIS M 05 Oct '25

05 Oct '25

I woke up this morning to my screen still being blacked out, but the backlight was on even though I have TDE set to: https://imgur.com/a/hVRnLMl The only way I can get it to turn off completely is by checking the " DISABLE SCREENSAVER" box, but by doing that, when you come back to the computer and move the mouse, instead of being asked for a password, you're taken straight to the desktop. What am I doing wrong? Its like down to the point where, I don't have time to tinker with things that constantly break so its like: 1 > I just leave the monitor on a screensaver at night and cover up the screen with something to make it dark in my bedroom. Because I hear, using the power switch on the monitor will age the monitor components faster. And Yes, I know leaving it on, with a screensaver will age the bulbs too.... But, its like Damned if you do, and Damned if you dont!!!!!!! 2> Tinker and figure out why the power settings are broke in TDE Thanks, Chris Platform: Linux Distribution: Debian 13 Desktop Environment: Trinity

Kate toolbar has become scrambled, almost unusable
by J Leslie Turriff 28 Sep '25

My Kate toolbar has become seriously deranged, with items out of order or missing. I tried using Toolbar Menu => Configure Toolbars... to fix it, but removing/readding/rearranging/resaving the icons does nothing. I'm reluctant to just erase the various .trinity/share/*/kate*rc files and start over because of the amount of toolbar customization involved. <https://c.mail.com/@649596501445582267/Z3aOiUr9-kbhFojWHpDOzg> is a link to a screenshot showing the difference between the toolbar and its supposed configuration. Live CD with Debian/TDE?
by dep 28 Sep '25

28 Sep '25

Hi, everybody! We're two months away from Microsoft Corp. discontinuing "support" of Windows 10. In conjunction with this, Windows 11, which is not just awful but also invasive, requires that many people purchase new computers. No doubt some will do this -- there will always be people who have more dollars than sense -- but many may be ripe for an alternative. I'll be in the next couple of days writing a piece on that alternative. The best choice, in my view, is Debian and TDE. So I'm seeking an installable live CD that provides just that. I thought there was one, "Matrix OS," but when one follows the link on the LiveCDs page -- https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/LiveCDs -- it throws a "your account is suspended" error. Is there another Debian spin containing TDE? It would be good if TDE were included in DEbian already -- Enlightenment is in the repository -- but I am not here to solve that problem. I'm here to rescue those whose computers have been abandoned by msft and, with luck, increase the TDE user base a bit. Thing is, I cannot recommend any other distribution or desktop. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

The continuing story of scanning software
by dep 23 Sep '25

23 Sep '25

In that there seemed to be a degree of interest, I thought I'd put on record this week's impressions of scanning software I've tried. Kooka -- as previously noted, it is just about impossible to establish a workflow. Works, in an emergency. EpsonScan2 -- segfaults at launch, which many of us would find a significant limitation. SimpleScan -- lacks configuration options and just, well, simple. IScan -- the original Epson native scanning application. Works well, but for instance when saving it starts with ~/ *every single time,* so you spend more time navigating your hard drive than actually scanning. GIMP -- nothing is simple with the GIMP, and scanning is no exception. I apparently have the plugins installed correctly -- itself an ordeal -- but haven't yet found a way to get GIMP to scan. Skanlite -- a surprise, and the current winner. Offers both image settings and applicating settings. Assumes that there's a good chance that it you saved the scan you made 90 seconds ago in a particular directory, you might want to save the one you made just now in that directory. Very much like the much better Windows version of the native Epson software. Unlike any non-VueScan Linux scanning software except IScan, can scan transparancies. KDE native, so it doesn't download half the Synaptic Debian repository. Has weird resolution settings, though, somewhat inexplicably but there might be a reason. Anyway, if your scanner is SANE-compliant, Skanlite seems the way to go. Apparently last built when KDE was doing whatever they were doing in 2020. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Kleopatra

I've been trying to load a p12 file into Kleopatra using Q4OS Aquarius, and Andromeda. I wasn't able to load the p12 into Aquarius at all. In Andromeda, I can load the certificate into Kleopatra, but once it's there, I can't decrypt received email messages in KMail. It throws an error when I enter the protection password for the certificate, then press okay. Something else I noticed, is there seems to be a status bar on the lower right hand side of the Kleopatra user interface. It seems to indicate a partially completed task at all times. I've mostly used Kleopatra Version 4.0.0.241203 (24.12.3) under Debian Trixie, so I'm still getting familiar with the version in Trinity. Any tips on some more things I could check? I've started tdepim issue for this: https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tdepim/issues/169 I don't know if there is some kind of missing user knowledge, or perhaps a workaround for this issue. I'd be happy to add some more updates to issue 169 if that helps in the troubleshooting. TIA, --Bruce

Kooka configuration
by dep 18 Sep '25

18 Sep '25

Greets, everybody . . . I have a need to scan in a bunch of pictures and documents using my Epson photo scanner. As is not unexpected, the reasonably good Epson-supplied scanning software core dumps. So I've looked at the other installed scanning software, which is xsane, which kinda-sorta works, Simple Scan, ditto, and Kooka, almost ditto. Kooka shows some hope, but it seems really flaky. For a start, it wants to put scans in "Kooka Gallery," but there is none such on my machine, so I can't tell where the hell it's putting them, though it seems to be saving them somewhere. I decided to RTFM, and right from the start, the screen shown does not at all resemble the Kooka I am running. I thought it might help to nuke ~.config/kookarc, but there isn't one. Has anybody used it? I would consider VueScan, which by all accounts is excellent but which is $150, and that sucks. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

A request for the next version of Konqueror
by dep 05 Sep '25

05 Sep '25

I use Konqueror as a file manager, as I imagine most people do. In the toolbar there is the view mode button, but if you click on it nothing happens. You have to click on the unbelievably small -- I've never hit it on the first try -- down triangle that pawns a menu of view modes: Icon view, multi-column view, list view, detailed list view, and so on. Right clicking on it, as with every other button in the toolbar, renders a toolbar menu. So all the button does is provide that tiny triangle. Wouldn't it make more sense if the button itself produced the view mode list? It would certainlt be much easier to use. I'm sure there was a reason for doing it as it is currently done, but that reason seems to have disappeared. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

cuppla things
by dep 05 Sep '25

05 Sep '25

First, some of us have had different experiences from mine installing Debian Trixie. That's because this time around I was testing the one-desktop tryout CDs, not the full-tilt install. So questions you get from the net installer you do not get from the one-desktop versions. Which is a crime, but there you are. (Also, trusting its partitioning is fraught with peril: I had to dump out of some software installation because / ran out of space, so I had to boot from a system rescue disk on USB and run GParted to make enough space.) Second, I've said ugly (and I think deserved) things about LXQT, but it does have one brilliant feature, in its little "Featherpad" equivalent to KEdit: As with KEdit, it will let you open files to which you do not normally have write permission, and even edit them. But unlike KEdit, if you make changes and try to save them, it prompts you for a password. That is a huge improvement in usability. Adding something like that to KEdit, unless it is overly complicated, would be a real plus. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

what would it take . . .
by dep 04 Sep '25

04 Sep '25

. . . to get a full proper TDE Debian release? I just spent most of an hour removing the droppings of LXQT. This is because I figured -- erroneously, it seems -- that it would be the easiest of the Debian iso files to fumigate after I installed TDE. I downloaded and installed the image that Jacob made as MatrixOS; problem is, it seems to be Debian 12, Bookworm, so installation would immediately have been followed by a full system upgrade, which would have taken even longer than squashing LXQT. They have live CDs of damn near everything: https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/ I'll happily donate to wherever one must in order to get TDE added to the list. The fact that LXDE, LXQT, XFCE, and frigging Cinnamon are there and TDE is not is a crime. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Stop me before I buy again!
by dep 26 Aug '25

26 Aug '25

I have a ThinkPad X200 that I bought new from Lenovo when you placed your order and they built it to your specs in early 2008. It was very expensive -- I even sprang for the cellular option (3G, before we knew about Gs). Also with the docking station, which I used every day, all day, as my office desktop. Undocked the computer and brought it home each night. Replaced the 160gb hard drive with a faster 1tb one 12 years ago. Only had 4gb RAM because 4 more would have been something like $700. Ran Linux and TDE the whole time. And kept it in very good shape. So tonight I sprang for two 4gb memory strips for an 8gb machine (now $35 rotal) and splurged $88 for a 1tb Samsung 870 Evo ssd. I did not buy it a cellular account, so it will finish its days with its cellular circuitry unused. I've never even seen a Linux cellular application. Anyway, I hope it will now be a lot faster. The empty ExpressCard slot might so-remain, because there's nothing that goes there -- two extra USB-3 ports, or an SD card reader, or maybe an M.2 PCIe sata drive -- that would be more than spending money just to spend money. At least there's an excuse for the upgrades. Over the life of the machine, they might save me as much as half an hour. I may have overvalued my time. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Trying to delete them, but many -- "My Computer" (gag), "Trash", "My Network Places" (double gag), "My Documents" (ditto), "Web Browser", and "Printers" are all owned by root and cannot be removed. I don't necessarily want them deleted forever, just put someplace where they don't make my desktop look as if birds just flew over. I'm sure they're a great help for those migrating from Windows 3.0. Thanks. Btw, the new icons in general are excellent. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

downgrade Trixie from 14.1.5pre to 14.1.4 possible?
by Felix Miata 25 Aug '25

I searched several combinations without finding an answer. Last tried: apt debian downgrade multiple package versions -reddit -ubuntu -quora -archlinux -python -rocky -rpm Can apt perform this type of transaction without removing *trinity* first? I did several Trixie upgrades after 9 August before discovering 14.1.4 had been made available weeks before. :( -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Control Center =>System Administration => Monitor & Display config file(s)?
by J Leslie Turriff 25 Aug '25

25 Aug '25

Well, I made the mistake of tinkering with the Monitor & Display settings in the Control Center on my other machine, expecting that the 'Test Settings' button would work like the 'Test' button in the Configure Desktop => Screen Saver does, but no; 'Test Settings' seems to have stored its settings somewhere, there is no evident way to revert the display, and further tinkering has now the monitor is totally unreadable. (I'd provide a screenshot, but as usual, my old Samsung Galaxy 6 phone can't be read by Trinity.) Fortunately, I can ssh into the broken machine from this one, but I have no idea where Monitor & Display stores its misconfiguration files. Does someone know where they would be? I see /etc/trinity/tdedisplay/tdedisplayconfigrc, but it doesn't seem like it would have the effects I'm seeing: | @14:04:11 leslie@─►chestnut◄─ | wd=/home/leslie | $ less /etc/trinity/tdedisplay/tdedisplayconfigrc | EnableAutoStartProfile=false | EnableDisplayControl=false | StartupProfileName= | rc=0 OTOH, on this machine, /etc/trinity/tdedisplay/ is empty, | @14:02:05 leslie@pinto | wd=/home/leslie | $ ls -l /etc/trinity/tdedisplay/ | total 0 | rc=0 so maybe just removing that config file will fix it? A big slice of dd hell
by dep 23 Aug '25

23 Aug '25

My SSD for the ThinkPad arrived, so I pulled the drive from the machine and using a separate machine to dd the contents of the existing drive onto the new one. It being a 1-tb drive on both ends, it took a few hours. dd reported success. I put the new SSD into the machine and booted it. I was happy to see it booted readily. I was less happy to see what happened next. I got to the nice graphical login window. I typed in my password. Screen went black with a mouse pointer, then after a few seconds returned to the login screen. Damn, I thought. So I shut down and reinstalled the original drive. And guess what? *Same thing*! Perfectly working installation has now lost the contents of its /home partition. Only thing there is /lost+found. This on the original drive, which dd shouldn't have touched at all. To say I am at a loss is an understatement. Everything else seems to work. Any informed guesses? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

And the hits just keep on coming
by dep 22 Aug '25

22 Aug '25

Thought that I would just do a full reinstall on the ThinkPad, using the Matrix ISO file, but still more is going crazy. It has suddenly been decided that the USB devices to which I've written uneventfully for years suddenly belong to root and that there's nothing I can do about it. This includes SD cards that I use to move stuff from my cameras to my hard drive every day. So while I was ultimately able to copy the .iso to a USB drive, the ThinkPad won't boot from it. It *will* boot from a pre-existing system rescue stick, so it's not the TPad. How can I restore normal behavior to USB? Running current Debian and current TDE, both fully updated. Very bad dream here this week. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

question re. testing
by dep 21 Aug '25

21 Aug '25

just did update/upgrade and see that the tde testing is now named whatever debian 14 will be. in my experience with it, which is some but not vast, it's not good to switch one's debian to the testing version until about a year after the last release -- kind of like not updating ubuntu until the latest lts had been out a year. but i'd still like to run the testing version of tde. any problem with doing this even though i'm sticking with trixie for now? i don't remember names being involved with tde testing previously. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Unlocking gnome-keyring hwen loging into TDE
by Thierry de Coulon 19 Aug '25

19 Aug '25

Chromium based browsers want to use gnome-keyring. My MX Linux (which installs with xfce) seems to install that too (at least there is a "password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so " in /etc/pam.d/common-password, and there was something in etc/pam.d/lightdm too). gnome-keyring does not get unlocked when I log into TDE/TDM, so these browsers ask for a password to unlock the keyring. My solution so far has been to use plaintext paswords (--password-store=basic) and I can live with it, because these are simply passwords to access websites, but it raises a question: is there a way to unlock gnome-keyring or KDE-wallet when loging into TDE (or to have chromium ude TDE's wallet)?

matrixOS: Call for help! (of sorts)
by jacobheinrich＠hotmail.com 15 Aug '25

Hey everyone! I hope youre all well, I have been away for quite a while. Here and there, I have been getting my matrixOS ISO ready for Trixie, with right now the only hold up is my homeserver which holds my personal git is tied up and packed away for another week. In the meantime I have been experimenting with various configs of packages and themes. Recently this has me wondering, what would everyone here like to see included in a Debian ISO that would make a universally recommended experience? Currently we have: Calamares installer with Autologin tweaked to work on TDM. Live-config hook for auto login on the live session Kubuntu 7.04-esque theme pulled from the Kubuntu default settings packages Mostly vanilla Trinity layout with some additions to the panel (again think old Kubuntu) "essential" apps like Libreoffice, firefox, vlc, gimp, etc* What I could use: Theme help (I have no sense of style, this includes wallpapers, plymouth splashes, ksplash themes, tdm themes) App suggestions (what are the apps you like to see) Tips or tricks youd like included on my site Testers

Where does the TDE menu live?
by dep 11 Aug '25

11 Aug '25

I just noticed something and am curious about it. Most desktops create a .menu file, which lives in the /etc/xdg/menus directory (sadly often after the desktop itself is long gone). But I do not see one for TDE, unless it has some unexpected name. Where does TDE put its menu? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

How to change textcursor in TDE ?
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 07 Aug '25

07 Aug '25

Hi all! Is there a way to change the text cursor in TDEs text input fields? I have the naging problem, that the cursor is 1px wide and thus barely visible on HDPI displays. In an ideal world I could change that to a blinking block cursor or at least to a wider bar cursor. Did anybody coma across a way to do that in TDE? by dep 05 Aug '25

Got up this morning to many kmail errors. Looked and saw that Proton VPN was down. Tried to restart it, and it was having no part of it. Nor would TDE shutdown. Did the usual alt-f emergency switch to a prompt. Did alt-ctrl-del and got a reboot. Login screen (sddm) as usual. Logged in to TDE. Got usual light blue screen, mouse pointer turned to the red one I use. Then, a while later, came the error box saying that kdesktop had crashed. Still got the startup sound, and top tells me that kicker is running. But no desktop. I forced a reinstall of kdesktop-trinity. No joy. Anybody see this before? Anybody know how to fix it? TIA. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Konqueror and url/task bar
by ajh-valmer 09 Jul '25

Hello, Sorry, me again. On my computer number 1, with Konqueror, at the right on the top, url/task bar, I have a field to seek a file, or a part of a file, it's very practical, if we have many files. Please, see the attached image "konqueror2.png". On my computer number 2, I don't have this field on the right, only the url/task bar. So I cannot seek a file. Please, see the attached image "konqueror1.png". Why on the same system Debian upgraded on two computers, Konqueror does not display the same configuration ? Thanks, cheers. André

Desktop media icon preview turning it off?
by Curt Howland 18 Jun '25

18 Jun '25

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Good morning. Yesterday I had a crash when moving a file icon to a thumb drive while the previously moved file icons were being deleted. The crash recovered almost instantly and I haven't seen any repercussions. Except... Now when I leave the mouse pointer over a media file icon, it starts to play it. The media player is not launched, it's just done as a preview. I found under "properties > preview" a "play automatically" check box, which I have unselected. I tried toggling that, but it did not work to stop the mouse-over preview. Can someone point me to where to turn this feature off globally? dropbox system tray disappeared
by Uwe Brauer 16 Jun '25

16 Jun '25

Hi all I am running Ubuntu 24.04 and 4:14.1.3 I have been warned in the last weeks the support for the system tray might be dropped and as of today it did. While in Ubuntu with the native Gnome desktop the tray is still visible, in trininty it is not. Is there anybody using Dropbox and the file synchronization? Did anybody find a workaround. For me this is a real loss because I relied quite a bit on it. Dropbox still works but I have no direct way of knowing whether a syncrhonization worked, how much space I am using, other than running the command line which is annoying Uwe Brauer

Using external player for system sounds; how do I pass arguments?
by simon.stockhaus.95＠gmail.com 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

I want to play system notifications through Pipewire's pw-play due to having some issues with ARtS (high CPU usage, volume spikes when playing multiple sounds - I'll write a bug report later), but if I just specify 'pw-play' as the player in the Knotify settings it only plays one sound at a time, I'm presuming since it's run as a foreground process. I know that you can add an '&' to the end of a command in the terminal to spawn it as a background process, is there a way to do something similar here? 'pw-play &' doesn't work since I'm assuming the file argument is appended to the end (or if the sound data is passed through stdin, idk how this works). Help would be appreciated.

Various bug reports
by raine263＠proton.me 02 Jun '25

Hi, Apologies if this is the wrong place to submit bugs. I initial tried reporting bugs via the Bugs link on the webpage, https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/issues, but it requires a login, and doesn't give an option to create a new account. I'm on Arch Linux, and after using Trinity for a few days, I noticed a few issues: 1. Dolphin is lacking the option to have a common display for all directories 2. Konqueror: maximum thumbnail limit of 100MB is to small by modern standards. I have video files that are measured in 10s of GBs for example... 3. Konqueror/Dolphin: thumbnails for basically all modern video files (example: mkv h265) are not generated. Would be nice to have a modern ffmpeg backend. 4. Thumbnails for JPEG XL and AVIF images are not generated. Similarly, they cannot be viewed at all. 5. Switching to another virtual terminal session (like a Plasma 6 session running for another user) and then switching back to the TDE session results in black screen, with only the mouse cursor visible. (Using SDDM.)

TDE Environment Variables in Debian/Devuan
by Darrell Anderson 28 May '25

28 May '25

I am a Slackware user. I have a Devuan VM, primarily to observe TDE differences with Slackware and to test TDE interaction with other desktop environments (DEs). In the VM when I log into a DE other than TDE, such as KDE, Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, etc., none of the TDE packages populate the respective DE panel menu. The reason is that none of the environment variables are set to find TDE software installed to the non standard /opt/trinity directory. Variables such as $PATH, $PKG_CONFIG_PATH, and $TDEDIR, $TDEHOME, etc. In Slackware I configure some /etc/profile.d scripts to modify these env. variables in a manner similar to starttde, but only if the user elects to include TDE variables in the environment. For you Debian users, is there an "adopted" TDE approach to allow a user to easily configure the environment variables? Thanks. :)

New Slackware Build Environment
by Darrell Anderson 26 May '25

26 May '25

Ladies and gentlemen, hobos and tramps, flies and mosquitoes, and bald-headed ants, For some time I have been creating a set of TDE build scripts for Slackware. Like many such projects, this started as a way to scratch my own itch. The scripts are written in the spirit and style of stock Slackware, SBo, AlienBOB, and Salix build scripts. On both 64-bit and 32-bit Slackware 15.0 I am able to compile 163 of 179 R14.1.4 packages. Spot tests on the desktop shows most everything functions. I built most of R14.1.4 on Current 64-bit, but a few glitches remain. For vintage computer users and for fun, I built most of the R14.1.4 packages on 14.2 64-bit (requires some updated stock packages). Excluding tde-18n, which at the moment builds as a single package, the build time for the remaining 162 packages is about 2 to 2.5 hours in a VM on my 8 year old 4-core system with SATA III SSDs. A 32-bit VM runs a bit slower. A test run on a dual core with 4 GB RAM and using the SATA II SSD as working space rather than tmpfs required about 5.25 hours. The scripts will compile with debug symbols for those who want to help debug and troubleshoot. The scripts are flexible with many build options. For many Slackware users the script collection likely is complete. Sounds encouraging so many packages can be compiled, but there remain challenges beyond my skills and experience. Although good quality beta at this stage, minutia and hair balls remain. Time to let this child go and let more capable hands finish the scripts. Remaining needs: * Expertise to finish the language bindings scripts. * LDAP and (Heimdal) Kerberos expertise to finish related scripts. * Split the i18n packages into individual language packages. * Test and break the scripts (they work well here but who knows). * Find missing patches, fix nuances, etc. * Patch TDE cmake and automake files to improve Slackware support. * Usability testing to ensure packages compiled correctly. * Ensure debug symbols create useful back traces. Gory details are available in the script documentation. Yes, there is documentation as well as significant commentary in the scripts. I ask the following: * Consider the build environment to be quality beta, usable and fairly solid but incomplete. * Please inform me if the scripts are moved online to a centralized location. I am letting go of the project, but I'm curious to see how my baby grows up. * I have no intention of joining or creating accounts on git flub or any other such service. Doesn't interest me. If you move the scripts online in that manner I will help through email as best as I can when asked. * As best as I can I will reply to emails about what rope I was smoking when I conjured up certain code and functions. Please do not flood me with a multitude of questions in a single email. I'm an old man, sometimes a grumpy old man. One or two topics per mail please. * I am not paid tech support. I have taken the scripts as far as I can go. As best as I can I will help but from now on, you break you fix. * I am not tethered to a phone or the web. I check email but do not expect Pavlovian replies. * I accept that just about everybody has different perspectives and ideas how build scripts should function. My hope is my approach is good enough for others to finish and polish. I hope Slackers use the scripts at a personal level, but my long term goal always has been that the scripts are massaged to become part of the TDE packaging system. I want all interested Slackware TDE users to benefit. This move would provide a centralized set of scripts for all Slackware users, but would provide a way to allow Slackware users to download binary packages, much in the way of other third party repos like AlienBOB and Salix. Okay. Enough of the sales pitch. Here is a link to a 13.2 MB tar.gz of the script collection: https://www.remembertheusers.com/files/tde-slackware.tgz To use the build scripts, unpack the archive and read tde.GETSTARTED. To help resolve known issues read tde.FIXME. The script collection could be much smaller, but I included build script collections for two untested obtuse third-party packages for k3b and koffice. Statler and Waldorf commentary about my scripts or senility should be forwarded to /dev/null. Thank you Jim Diamond for your reviews, patience, and insights with the scripts. I learned a few things from you. Thank you for your attention. May we always see darkstar on our first boot. :-) D.A.

Kate won't remember syntax highlighting
by Darrell Anderson 18 May '25

18 May '25

For some time a quirk in Kate has been haunting me. Kate seems unable to remember my syntax highlighting selections. This happens with two different user accounts on two different computers. I have Kate configured to store meta data for 180 days. Browsing the meta data file finds all affected files are stored and the 'Highlighting=' key is correct. As soon as I launch Kate the highlighting is plain text and the meta data file 'Highlighting=' key is empty. Deleting the meta file and starting from scratch has no effect. I don't use KWrite and can't offer any related observations. Any ideas? Thanks. :)

Not a TDE problem, a grub problem
by Thierry de Coulon 05 May '25

05 May '25

Hello all, I know this is not a TDE problem, but as some here know much more than I do: I am trying to clone a 256GB SSD to a 512Gb one. I did clone the disk, but O can't bott directly (I get a grub prompt). So I boot to my system fom a USB install thumbdrive, and try to reintsall grub. This is (I think) a grub-efi system (it has a win11 partition that I unfortunately have to keep and is GPT formatted). The error message I get is: grub-install error: cannot copy '/usr/share/locale/fr.gmo' to '/boot/grub/locale/fr.mo': Is a directory And all my searches return nothing about this error message. When I have time (this summer), I can do a complete reinstall but maybe someone here understands more about it and can give a clue? Thierry

My pytqt build script fails with: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'sip_tqt_config' Caused by the configure.py command: import sip_tqt_config I presume the sip4-tqt package built okay because such a file does exist: /usr/lib64/python3.9/site-packages/sip4-tqt/sip_tqt_config.py Running the following command exits with a zero exit code: python3 /usr/lib64/python3.9/site-packages/sip4-tqt/sip_tqt_config.py Running a python shell: import sys print(sys.path) ['', '/usr/lib64/python39.zip', '/usr/lib64/python3.9', '/usr/lib64/python3.9/lib-dynload', '/usr/lib64/python3.9/site-packages'] Here is how I compiled sip4-tqt: PYTHON_SITE_PACKAGES=$(python3 -c "import site; print(site.getsitepackages())" | cut -d ',' -f1 | tr -d "'" | tr -d "\[") FLAGS="$CPUOPT -I${INSTALL_DIR}/include/tqt -I/${INSTALL_DIR}/include -I/usr/include" python3 configure.py \ -b "${INSTALL_DIR}/bin" \ -d "${PYTHON_SITE_PACKAGES}/${PRGNAM}" \ -e "${INSTALL_DIR}/include/" \ -u CFLAGS="$FLAGS" CXXFLAGS="$FLAGS" Where $INSTALL_DIR=/opt/trinity. Here is how I am trying to compile pytqt based on my poor understanding of the Debian rules script: PYTHON_VERSION="$(python3 -V | cut -f 2 -d' ' | cut -f 1-2 -d.)" PYTHON_SITE_PACKAGES="$(python3 -c "import site; print(site.getsitepackages())" | cut -d ',' -f1 | tr -d "'" | tr -d "\[")" FLAGS="$CPUOPT -I${INSTALL_DIR}/include/tqt -I/${INSTALL_DIR}/include -I/usr/include" python3 configure.py \ -b "${INSTALL_DIR}/bin" \ -d "${PYTHON_SITE_PACKAGES}/${PRGNAM}" \ -e "${INSTALL_DIR}/include/" \ -l /usr/include/python${PYTHON_VERSION} \ -v ${PYTHON_SITE_PACKAGES}/sip4-tqt/ \ -m /usr/lib${LIBDIRSUFFIX}/python${PYTHON_VERSION}/config-3.9-x86_64-linux-gnu \ -z CFLAGS="$FLAGS" CXXFLAGS="$FLAGS" Where $INSTALL_DIR=/opt/trinity. Fish out of water.... Thanks. :)

What is tdepyuic?
by Darrell Anderson 04 May '25

04 May '25

I'm building TDE packages for Slackware. I tried to compile desktop-effects-tde. The configuration steps informed me I am missing tdepyuic. I have no idea what that is. A separate package? Part of the Python bindings? Thanks. :)

Testing back traces
by Darrell Anderson 03 May '25

03 May '25

I am creating a Slackware build environment. I want to test back traces (not tripping out symbols). I seem to recall there was a way to test this in TDE but I don't remember. How to test back traces and symbols? Thanks. :)

TDE R14.1.4 released, new target started…
by Slávek Banko 30 Apr '25

30 Apr '25

Hi all, after R14.1.4 was released, the window for the development of R14.1.5 has already been opened. The first pull-requests have already been merged, new translations are merged, the first builds of the packages will be started soon. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. The packages in both repositories are identical for some time, so it is smooth to change the apt source if you want. Otherwise, we will be happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Publishing the first R14.1.5 preliminary packages I suppose on 11 May. You can stay up to date on TDE news and development by following our Mastodon channel https://floss.social/@tde If you can, please help supporting the project with a donation. https://www.trinitydesktop.org/donate.php Thank you for your support! Cheers Slávek --

Downloading all TDE packages
by Darrell Anderson 27 Apr '25

27 Apr '25

A few days ago I installed Devuan Daedalus in a VM and downloaded the TDE 14.1.3 mega package 'tde-trinity'. I presumed that "mega" package downloaded everything TDE, but seems to be only individual packages split from the core package group. Missing from my effort are packages such as amarok, koffice, themes, etc. I tried 'apt search trinity' but that is a messy output. Next I tried 'apt-cache search trinity | grep -v 18n'. That produced a list of 786 packages. Clipping the output produces provided me only package names. I shrugged, inhaled, and launched 'for pkg in $(apt-cache search trinity | grep -v i18n | sed 's| - .*||'); do apt install -y $pkg; done'. Seemed to succeed but raised a simple question. Is there a short-hand method to download everything TDE?

Recognizing phone
by Darrell Anderson 24 Apr '25

24 Apr '25

I have a flip phone that is recognized immediately (lsusb) but does not appear anywhere in TDE that I can see. I receive popups or desktop icons in KDE and Xfce. I have enabled KControl->Desktop->Behavior->Device Icons->Show Device Icons. There are few devices in that list not enabled, but I do not see anything in Konqueror Storage Devices. My first presumption is something not configured correctly here or packages not compiled correctly. What is fully required to get TDE to recognize the phone? Thanks.

TDE full install (everything and the kitchen sink)
by Darrell Anderson 23 Apr '25

23 Apr '25

I finally created a Devuan VM. I installed KDE, Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon. Everything is updated and seems to be working fine. I populated apt sources.list per the wiki and downloaded the TDE signing key. When I run the following command: apt install tde-trinity I receive the message: The following packages will be REMOVED: desktop-base gnome-control-center I did not install the GNOME desktop and don't care about gnome-control-center (probably a Cinnamon requirement). I do not know what removing desktop-base will do. Running "apt show desktop-base" reveals a description of "common files for the Devuan Desktop." Is auto removing desktop-base safe? I want to retain all of the other desktop environments to see how TDE interacts in a mixed environment. Second, I want to install every doggone TDE package possible. I never have experienced a full TDE and I want to see how everything functions. Running "apt search trinity" finds many packages. I don't know if "apt install tde-trinity" installs everything. My Debian Fu is horribly rusty and could use help proceeding. Thanks.
