disabling ipv6
by dep 25 Mar '23

25 Mar '23

Another thorny Thinkpad issue. Running current TDE atop Debian Bedbug (okay, Bookworm). Trying to run ProtonVPN, which blows up. Had the same problem with the desktop and was able to fix it by in what I think is the TDE network applet -- it doesn't identify itself -- in the settings for ipv6 I disabled ipv6 (which ProtonVPN requires). But on the Thinkpad install there is no such setting. I need to disable ipv6; I would just as soon not edit /etc/sysctl.conf unless I absolutely have to. Is there a TDE setting that lets me do this? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Kinda on topic
by dep 25 Mar '23

Decided to relax a little, but failed because I found a channel on YouTube called "NCommander," where a guy who knows his subject plays with old software. For instance, I watched him compile WinWord for OS/2 v. 1.2. It was a very tense operation as I saw loads of long-forgotten OS/2 errors that in later OS/2 versions meant at least boot from floppy and from the third install floppy run fdisk (with some switches I've forgotten) or else the dreaded rf-ri -- reformat-reinstall. But the real waves of dread came in the video in which he installed SLS Linux from 31 floppies. It didn't go well, but what got me were the parts that did. Installing Linux a quarter century ago was hell. It was a minefield. Still, if you're not subject to nightmarish flashbacks, it's a pretty enjoyable video. The whole floppy-swap experience and everything. (Though he didn't get into editing Xf86config, which was half the . . . fun.) dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

"Notifications" in newer TDE
by Thierry de Coulon 24 Mar '23

24 Mar '23

I'm pretty sure this came with the last upgrade to TDE: I now regularely have small windows poping up on the right bottom of my screen with messages that look like "notifications" about something that just happened (mostly some partition having just been mounted). Yesterday I got a big, quick series of such "notifications" from my browser. So quick in fact that I don't know what they were about. They do disappear quickly too (maybe from their own or because I clicked somewhere ??). Anyway, I was wondering if there is any playe in TDE where we can control this new "feature". I looked in TCC but could not find anything new. Oh! It's 14.1.0 (Development) from the PSB. Thierry

two configuration issues
by dep 24 Mar '23

24 Mar '23

greets, folks. i should start by saying that i have no opinion on how the TDE entity should be financed or governed, though as a general rule international nonprofits do better when based in switzerland. now, why i'm here: i've hit a couple of configuration issues. first, how do i make the desktop pager go away, forever, appearing nowhere. i use one desktop, and don't have room to spare on kicker. second, how do i make the trashcan and icon go away. on my desktop machine i somehow found a way to put it as a hidden directory in my home directory, which is fine. but i do not want it appearing on my desktop. didn't like it in windows 3.0 and still don't. third, the awful phenomenon of the keyring login popping up and demanding a password whenever i lon in to the net has returned. i don't remember how it got killed last time. anyone know how to do these things? thanks. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Gitea severity levels (SL/*)
by J Leslie Turriff 23 Mar '23

23 Mar '23

When creating a bug report or enhancement request, the template says, | and apparently the levels are supposed to appear in the box to the right, but for the tickets I've opened, there are no levels listed there. The wiki says, "Optionally, you can assign one or more labels (6) to the report, for better categorization." Is the above comment (Use SL/*...) included in the template by mistake, or are the level descriptions omitted by mistake? What does one replace the * with to choose a level? libkgtk2.so?
by dep 20 Mar '23

20 Mar '23

Hi, everybody! The notebook Debianization project proceeds apace. Between the parsimonious default packages in Debian -- "locate" is not installed by default, nor "sudo" -- and my personal dislike of TDE defaults, it's finicky. Having installed tdetrinity-base rather than the everything including the tea-timer version, I went a little hog-wild in Synaptic and installed what seems to be too much gtk support, for both 2 and 3, which caused firefox to blow up saying it can't do both. So I went back to synaptic and removed Trinity-related gtk stuff. Now, when I open, say, konsole, I get this, twice: ERROR: ld.so: object '/opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/libkgtk2.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored. It seems to do harm, but I'd just as soon install whatever is needed to make the error go away. Anybody know which package I need? Thanks in advance. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

"Could not find mime type application/octet-stream"
by Dan Youngquist 18 Mar '23

18 Mar '23

This started a month or so ago, presumably as a result of an update. When certain programs open, most frequently Konqueror and Kicker, I get popup warnings, "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream". Kicker does 7 of those all at once before it finishes starting, Konqueror only one. While using Konqueror, another pops up frequently, and sometimes goes away on its own in a few seconds if I don't click it away. It's gotta be something simple, but I haven't had time to debug it. greets, everyone . . . as a test run and experiment -- and to upgrade it -- i did a clean, fresh install of debian bookworm -- i keep wanting to say butterbean -- on my old but good thinkpad x200. much to my surprise, it was the quickest and easiest linux installation i've ever done. i realize that configuration is a whole nother story, but i'm impressed so far. there being no TDE choise, i installed gnome, because it brings along a lot of stuff that applications will need anyway. time now to edit /etc/apt/sources.list, and i'd kind of like to get it right. there's no listing on the TDE page for bookworm; the latest is bullseye. bookworm is, i think, what used to be "testing." i presume that using bullseye would be entirely compatable, but before i break something i want to double-check. is it? also, i wonder what it would take to get TDE listed among the debian installation choices. i see that plasma is, so i don't think it's that ancient qt fuss -- plus, the install went out and got "non-free" drivers for the video and the wifi card. it would be a good thing, i think if it were. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Global view properties in Dolphin
by Leskala 16 Mar '23

16 Mar '23

Hi all, quick question regarding Trinity's Dolphin: When "Save view properties for each folder" is disabled, any setting related to sort mode (by name, by date etc.) or sort order (ascending, descending) is reset as soon as the folder is changed. This also applies to the "Show Hidden Files" option. Even if "All folders" is selected in "View" > "Adjust View Properties ..." the above persists. The "Apply view properties to:" options only seem to have any effect if "Save view properties for each folder" from the settings is also enabled. So without enabling per-folder settings (and having .d3lphinview files everywhere) there is no way in Dolphin to set persistent global view properties like sort order - or am I missing something? Well, you've sold me, but . . .
by dep 14 Mar '23

14 Mar '23

For a start, I'll need to get months of treatment if I'm to recover from my exposure to the Trisquel folks. It's no exaggeration to say that they might well consider Richard M. Stallman insufficiently pure ideologically. Perhaps it comes from guilt; they acknowledge that without Canonical a/k/a Ubuntu they could not exist. It's a little like Judge Roy Bean's comment on reformed prostitutes, indeed, reformed anything. One referred to Debian as a "fallen gold standard," and I pointed out that gold is actually up $52 today, but I doubt that changed any minds. It's too bad. A simply de-Canonicaled Ubuntu would be a good thing. Which leaves Debian. If I weren't bone lazy I would have adopted it instead of Ubuntu many years ago. Thanks to everyone here for the many useful tips in that regard, and other regards, though I think it's pretty clear that Debian is the answer. It's rye whisky, while most other distros are umbrella drinks. I have one question (well, many, but this one just surprised me): of the many ISOs in the TDE repository, there isn't a Debian one. Is there some reason for this or simply nobody to make one? Like any good former OS/2 user, as a matter of reflex I have /home on its own partition, pictures on their own partition and drive, and so on. I'll probably further back up /home on an empty partition of another drive as well. (Having mentioned OS/2, let me once again whine about it having been wise from the get-go to segregate applications in their own directories, as opposed to intermingling them with everything else.) Anyway, having asked and been advised, I thought it right to let everybody know where I am ending up. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

MX Package Installer / Install TDE on any Debian based system

Specifically for their “Package Installer.” It makes installing most anything a one click operation. Saving hours of research to correctly install something like a full LAMP stack or Virtuabox makes me happy. But at the end of the day it’s just a bunch of scripts, that are portable to any Debian based system. I’m not sure if you’ll want or need them, but I’m attaching the tar archive of the MX set of scripts for any that might find them useful. While most of them are easy enough to figure out, some (like the ***vpn’s) are fairly complex, but reading several to get the context should be good enough for most on this list to be able to deconstruct them into commands to run as root. Dolphin will no longer open portable storage devices
by Ken Heard 13 Mar '23

13 Mar '23

I started my desktop one day last week and wanted to open such a device, but Dolphin would not let me. I was surprised because the previous day I had no trouble opening Dolphin. Something must have happened overnight. Instead that morning Dolphin crashed and returned a going away message which said the following, among other things: > The application Dolphin (d3lphin) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). Another message provided by the TDE crash handler read as follows: > Could not generate a backtrace because the debugger 'gbd' was not found. I understand that the generic term for what happened is called a 'segmentation fault' and I know what that phrase means. What I do not know however it what to do to fix one when it occurs. I did however discover that I could access from a terminal and through Gwenview all my portable devices. Even so, the absence of Dolphin limited my full and effective use of the computer. I also tried using Konqueror but encountered problems with it as well. When I tried to open a device I expected that I would be able to view a list of the directories in the selected device. Instead Kwrite was activated, but said that it could not proceed because what Kwrite found there were directories rather than files. I would certainly be grateful for any help to me free myself from this dilemma. Trisquel/drop-in ubuntu replacement
by dep 13 Mar '23

13 Mar '23

Just found this reply to my note on their list about jumping from Ubuntu to Trisquel. They're actually ideologically even more purist than Debian is, it seems -- there's a non-free Debian repository nowadays, isn't there? Anyway: First of all: welcome! > there are certain "non-free" packages i need, particularly video drivers. The Trisquel community will not "help" you install non-free software, because it does not consider it would actually be helping you: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/trisquel-community-guidelines > by pointing at the trisquel servers in my /etc/apt/sources.list instead > of ubuntu ones, i can switch by simply doing the usual apt update / apt > upgrade Non-free packages would remain and would never be upgraded, even if vulnerabilities in them are exploited. If I were you, I would export the list of installed packages following https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/cloning-system-or-how-make-copy-installed-pac… (for instance), make a fresh install of Trisquel 11 Beta 6 (based on Ubuntu 22.04) using the ISO on https://cdbuilds.trisquel.org/aramo/ providing your desktop environment of preference (tell us which one it is if you do not know what ISO to download) and import the packages. Those that are not installable are certainly proprietary software. > are the package names the same? Yes. > is there a non-free repository for things like vid drivers? No. Trisquel is 100% free software. > i presume my other sources.list lines, that have to do with ppas and the > like, could remain intact. You can save those files before the fresh install too. For your own sake, I hope you will not re-add PPA proposing proprietary software. > what version name (focal, jammy, for instance, should i employ The code name of Trisquel 10 (based on Ubuntu 20.04) is Nabia. That of Trisquel 11 (based on Ubuntu 22.04) is Aramo. > is there a model sources.list I could copy from? Because I download the packages from https://mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/trisquel-packages/ (there are many other mirrors) and I use Trisquel 11 Aramo, my /etc/apt/sources.list is: # Trisquel repositories for supported software and updates deb https://mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/trisquel-packages/ aramo main deb https://mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/trisquel-packages/ aramo-security main deb https://mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/trisquel-packages/ aramo-updates main deb https://mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/trisquel-packages/ aramo-backports main [eoq] So they seem to be the computer equivalent of woke, which seems to me to be that they'd rather I follow the RMS model than have a computer that does what I need it to do. There are no Nvidia drivers from the FSF that do what the Nvidia binary blobs and associated configuration software do. The on-topic question: there are TDE packages that would work, correct? Are there even any for "aramo"? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

drop-in ubuntu replacements?
by dep 11 Mar '23

11 Mar '23

greets, everybody . . . i've been away, working on a book project, but now i need to turn to this list. i've used ubuntu for well over a decade, happily. canonical has gone kind of flaky -- first, update messages got salted with announcements that they're holding back some security updates unless i register with them (and we all know where that leads). now i updates my second machine, running 2004LTS, and got a pop-up saying support will end in 43 days unless i upgrade to 2204. until now, upgrading was simply a matter of changing the version name in the sources list, then doing the usual update/upgrade thing. usually i had to do it a couple of times to get everything, but it worked. my desktop is pretty elaborately configured. a clean install would take a week i don't have, followed by a year of every so often finding something that no longer works. so . . . i'm hoping to find what amounts to a ubuntu clone but free of whatever it is that canonical is up to. by this, i mean a distro that will let me change the version name (and probably the server) in the sources list (actually, in synaptic), and let 'er rip, with package names and so on being the same to the extent that it won't break everything. there used to be a lot of -buntus -- for a while i was using kubuntu until kde went its goofy way and ubuntu dropped support for it. i see now that there is something called "trisquel," and that seems a likely choice, if package naming conventions are the same -- i know that version names aren't. anybody tried it? i's do debian, but that would take me a week or two to fix the stuff broken by their politics, even as i'm trying to fix what canonical is breaking for business reasons. i do not want snap or appimage, just plain old deb. what's the right answer? is there a solid non-ubuntu ubuntu that without too much crowbar use runs TDE? thanks in advance. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Coexistence of TDE and KDE
by Dave Close 11 Mar '23

11 Mar '23

I made these comments in response to a different topic and suspect they were overlooked as a result. Hence, another attempt. On a Fedora 37 system with KDE (5) working, I installed TDE. All of it except the applications. Having KDE 5 installed before installing TDE seems to have resulted in some confusion. The DE startup splash screen, for example, says it is starting Plasma by KDE. Once started, it does appear to actually be TDE. But some parts of TDE don't work as expected. For example, the TDE Control Center doesn't start if selected from the start menu. Nothing at all happens. Starting kcontrol from a shell does start what appears to be the program but nothing in it works. On exit, the shell reports, "WARNING: No TDE menu group with X-TDE-BaseGroup=settings found | Defaulting to Settings/". Is this sort of installation expected to work? Configuring TDM
by Darrell Anderson 10 Mar '23

10 Mar '23

I am trying to configure TDM. The default is some kind of black background. The login dialog is so dark of a gray that I can't read the black text in the dialog. This seems to be an os_enterprise theme? Is this the normal default? Using the TCC Login Manager module I was able to get something usable, but I had to manually edit the tdmrc file to Theme= (nothing) to kill that dark theme. The login dialog has a title bar with a caption that says 'Login to TDE'. Looking at the code this seems hard-coded? Can this be changed? Seems the caption should say 'Login' or possibly be dynamic to whatever session the user selects? Regardless of whatever session I select I get dumped into a terminal window shell. Seems something is misconfigured and TDM is not sourcing any xsession files. Appreciate any help. DA

Ksnapshot
by phiebie＠drei.at 03 Mar '23

03 Mar '23

Trinity 14.0.6 preliminary. Don't know if it is a feature of ksnapshot or a misconfiguration somewhere from me, but it is getting absolutely annoying what happens. I have a website, a document or whatsoever on my screen in full A4-papersize. Now I want a printout of a small part of it. Call ksnapshot, choose "region" "new snapshot" and then draw a border around the desired part. Press "print" and then print it. Bull... I get a print in landscape, useless and even worse not even the original layout reappears. Stop ksnapshot, restart it and same procedure with again the same miserable result. Stop, restart, same procedure but no actual printing, instead I look into the printer properties. And there, big surprise, landscape was marked as to be printed BUT all 4 orientations were grayed out, so I couldn't change that. Checked in tdeprint the printersettings, nothing wrong, in "instances" "settings" all 4 orientations were available and portrait was marked as to be applied in the default printer. Checked kprinter and of course the settings of tdeprint were there also valid. But then I had an idea. If I selected in ksnapshot a larger part of the screen, say more than half A4, what would happen? Yes, some ugly words from me and there it was: portrait was marked but still all 4 possibilities grayed out. So ksnapshot decides how it wants to print and doesn't leave the user a chance to get a result, that he wants. Utterly bull.... Any suggestion, where I could look to alter this behaviour? Phiebie.

TDE special window rules
by Darrell Anderson 02 Mar '23

02 Mar '23

I am trying to configure special window rules for some VirtualBox machines. I want the virtual machines to always open in virtual desktop/workspace 2. I have many virtual machines but a few I use almost daily. Many years ago I created *.desktop files to launch these few systems without needing to launch the VirtualBox Manager. I have used devilspie to force launching in desktop 2. While devilspie works well in TDE, I want to do this natively with TDE special window rules. I have been unable to configure special rules in TDE to ensure the virtual machines open in desktop 2. Everything I try in TDE special rules results in the virtual machines opening in the current desktop. Other special window rules are working as expected. Selecting the special rules "Detect" button does not help. I suspect something different about VirtualBox that is not obvious. Help is appreciated with respect to creating TDE special rules. Thank you! P.S. To simulate the *.desktop files, launch the mini cli (Alt+F2) and launch a virtual machine like this: vboxmanage startvm "name_of_virtual_machine" DA

Notification popup timeout
by Darrell Anderson 02 Mar '23

02 Mar '23

Where is the notification popup timeout stored? I have several cron jobs that have been running for years with notify-send --expire-time=0. The popups remain active until explicitly acknowledged, but in TDE the popups timeout at about 6 to 7 seconds and close. Does TDE ignore notify-send timeout parameters? Is there a preferred way to create persistent notifications in TDE? Thanks again.

Integration With GIO and xdg-mime
by artsmelly＠protonmail.com 20 Feb '23

20 Feb '23

Hello, I installed Trinity from scratch on Debian 11 Stable. However, I am having trouble opening the default applications in Firefox and other GTK+ applications. The same goes for xdg-mime. Since Trinity apps are in /opt/trinity/share/applications/tde, xdg-mime and GIO can't see them and doesn't apply them even if I set them correctly. For example, even if I do "xdg-mime default /opt/trinity/share/applications/tde/kpdf.desktop application/pdf" or "xdg-mime default kpdf.desktop application/pdf", it doesn't work at all. So, my question is: How can I sync the Trinity Control Center>TDE Components>File Associations list to both xdg-mime and gio? Or how can we export a mimeinfo file that uses trinity desktop files to .config f or a directory shared by gio and xdg-mime?

PSB repository will soon be updated from R14.0.x~pre to R14.1.0~pre
by Slávek Banko 13 Feb '23

13 Feb '23

Dear developers and users, after the release of TDE R14.0.13, we shared our tentative plan for launching TDE R14.1.0 at the next release cycle. Since the development of the last few tasks for R14.1.0 has been proceeding favorably, we now consider the R14.0.x series to be closed and the next stable version to be R14.1.0. The deb packages repository known as PSB (Preliminary Stable Builds) contains preliminary packages of the "upcoming stable version". Therefore, this repository will be updated and will provide packages for R14.1.0~pre in future. We intend to do this major update at the end of February. This means that from that moment to the final release of R14.1.0, PSB and PTB repositories will provide the same packages. If you are using PSB repository, but do not want to participate in the final phase of testing the upcoming R14.1.0, you should change your apt sources and direct them to the final versions of R14.0.x series. R14.1.0~pre is very stable, so the development team would appreciate if you could help testing R14.1.0 before the final release. Thank you for your participation in the development. Slávek Banko

Configuring TDE coexistence with other DEs
by Darrell Anderson 03 Feb '23

03 Feb '23

Hi All, Is there a guideline to configure TDE to coexist fluidly with multiple DEs installed? Beyond installing to /opt/. Tips and tricks. I searched the wiki. I would not mind discovering that after being away from TDE for some years that I am not configuring or compiling correctly, but seems TDE is somewhat designed with a presumption of only using TDE. Or possibly the build scripts I found are configured incorrectly. One way or another I need to know how environments should be configured inside and outside of TDE. * Correctly configure TDE and other DE or system environment variables. * How to use TDE software when using a different DE. * How to use KDE software when using TDE. * How to not lose themes when using KDE software within TDE. * Ensuring dbus/dcop are accessed correctly. For example, when launching TDE the starttde script ensures $TDEDIR/bin is in the environment $PATH just before /usr/bin. The opposite of that is using TDE software in a different DE then $TDEDIR/bin needs to be in $PATH just after /usr/bin (unless wanting to always type full paths). Yet I am not aware of anything that automatically configures $PATH that way. There are many TDE files with the same file names as in KDE, but that does not mean all KDE software should be ignored. Yet launching KDE software from within TDE (for me) results in a loss of toolbar icon themes with the icons defaulting to flat icons. I can remedy that by using a script wrapper to launch KDE software with the script modifying XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=TDE:KDE. The change in the environment variable only affects that process but helps avoid the loss of the toolbar icon theme. Oddly, running KDE software inside other DEs has no such theme issues, which implies something is incorrectly configured in (my) TDE (possibly environment variables). Setting XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=TDE:KDE in the environment before TDE fully launches causes some weird problems and xsession log spew. While XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP and XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP support were added to TDM, seems the support was not added for launching TDE from the console with startx. Other oddities include how the TDE GTK2 and GTK3 theme engines affect other DEs. Weird things happens when those two TDE packages are installed. Thanks for your time! D.A

Kate Sort Plugin
by Darrell Anderson 03 Feb '23

03 Feb '23

Hi All, For Kate there is a tdeaddons sort plugin. Does sorting selected text/rows/lines work for anybody else? If yes, is there a specific mantra to be sung to get the plugin to sort selected text? The original README explicitly states "Sorts selected rows or whole file." The handbook says likewise with "Sort allows sorting a text file or selection of text." For me the plugin ignores any selections. When the dialog appears the selection is emptied and sorts the entire document. Sorting the characters of a word or phrase also fails. The dialog automatically populates the column fields but then fails to sort the selected text. Please let me know if the plugin is broken or I am missing the big picture. Thanks for your time! D.A.

Abrupt virtual desktop switching
by Darrell Anderson 02 Feb '23

02 Feb '23

Hi All, I use two virtual desktops. The majority of usage is with the first desktop. Occasionally any simple mouse pointer movement on the first desktop throws the focus into virtual desktop 2. The mouse is nowhere near the panel workspace switcher/pager. No data but the abrupt switch seems to occur after the desktop has been idle for a while. Screen saver is set to 10 minutes blank screen. The panel workspace switcher/pager applet scroll wheel cycling is disabled and I am certain I am not touching the scroll wheel or mouse buttons. I tried different mice. I tried different mouse pointers and currently use the System theme option until finding the root cause. Desktop-->Behavior-->Mouse Button Actions are configured to No Action/No Action/Desktop Menu. Desktop-->Taskbar-->Actions: Show Task List/Activate Task/Show Operations Menu. Desktop-->Panels-->Appearance-->Advanced Options: Applet Handles configured to Visible, Fade out, or Hide makes no difference Any insight or help appreciated. Thanks for your time! D.A

Missing GTK option in Trinity Control Center (Arch)
by Wirlaburla 01 Feb '23

01 Feb '23

Hi. I've been missing the GTK appearance options in the Trinity Control Center since R14.0.13, and I haven't a clue why. To be honest, I haven't really dug super deep into debugging, but nothing obvious seems to pop up. It's just missing, and kcontrol doesn't even complain about it. Pacman shows I have the gtk engines installed: $ pacman -Q | grep tde-gtk tde-gtk-qt-engine 14.0.13-2 tde-gtk3-tqt-engine 14.0.13-1 Building the packages myself didn't work and I have tried this on a fresh install to no avail. I know it should exist, as I have a raspberry pi running Arch ARM that has the option there clear as day (Thanks for the ARM builds by the way). Perhaps a bad package? I'd appreciate any help. -- Nick G. / Wirlaburla

Mouse pointer acceleration is too fast
by Darrell Anderson 30 Jan '23

Hi All, Is there a way to fine control mouse pointer movement within TDE (not with xorg.conf.d)? I have acceleration set to 1.0. The pointer begins accelerating immediately with little motion from my hand. I have tried manually editing the kcminputrc file to less than 1.0 acceleration, but that does not slow the acceleration. I'll settle for work-arounds if they exist. Thanks for your time! D.A

Good Day everyone, I still wonder, after all those years, how to configure root login shell in konsole to ask again and not just die when I mistyped the password. Konsole is launched with the arguments "su --login" or "su --login -c 'mc -c'". 'su' in a USER shell also dies after one login attempt. So, it seems, su needs to be configured. But it is hard for me to see through su/pam configuration. Any help or hint is muchly appreciated. Thanks and kind regards, Stefan

Need feedback on feature idea: Keyboard layouts set up on first start
by blu.256 14 Jan '23

14 Jan '23

Hello everyone! I have been working on some fixes improvements to KXkb, the TDE keyboard tool and layout switcher¹. The fixes should make configuring keyboard layouts easier and should solve some long-standing issues with keyboard switching (e.g. Bugzilla issue #100). One of the improvements that I have been thinking to include but for which I need user feedback concerns TDEPersonalizer, the wizard that gets shown on the first run of the desktop, or later, at users' choice. The first step of this wizard lets you choose your country and system language. The idea is that based on this information, the keyboard layouts will be conveniently set up for you with a sane default, with minimal need for user feedback (who can later adjust this default manually). But the problem is that I am not sure what that default should be. If you consider, for example, cyrillic languages or greek, a good default, in my opinion, would be a combination of the standard latin layout (English) plus the layout of that language (so you have two layouts that you can switch between). If you take languages based on the latin alphabet though (e.g. Italian, French, Czech etc.) users might not actually need a latin layout, so they will be fine with just the layout of the keyboard layout of their own language. A good solution IMO would be adding a checkbox just below country and language selection that would let you enable/disable the English layout. This checkbox would not be shown if the language you selected is already English (US, UK or any variant). So, I am asking for your feedback, especially those of you who use non-English keyboard layouts: What do you think of this idea? Do you think the checkbox approach is good enough? What should be the default state of the checkbox, enable or disable English layout? Please take in mind beginner Trinity users too. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated! -- Philippe MAVRIDIS ¹ The relevant pull request is here: https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tdebase/pulls/304 You can take a look at the discussion that has already happened thereif you want. P.S. I've been having problems with GMail and the mailing list. This must be the fourth time I'm trying to send this e-mail. I'm resending this from the e-mail address that I have on ProtonMail.

Found a free Book for Qt3
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 02 Jan '23

Hi all! The 2004 book "C++ GUI Programming with Qt 3 (ISBN 0-13-124072-2)" that's mentioned in http://trinitydesktop.org/docs/qt3/how-to-learn-ntqt.html is available for free now at https://www.researchgate.net/publication/245591968_C_GUI_Programming_with_Q… Things to note: - Names changed from "Qt..." to "TQt..." - compiling by hand needs something like "g++ a.cpp $(pkgconf tqt --cflags --libs) -lstdc++" - "qmake -project ..." will not include the TDE folders, so you'll have to add them manually to the *.pro file - When in doubt: http://trinitydesktop.org/docs/qt3/ Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Direct shutdown of Block screen (feature request)
by Christian Schmitz 01 Jan '23

01 Jan '23

Hi everyone: First, happy new year. I have a notebook with opensuse tumbleweed and trinity desktop. I configure it to enter on sleep when the lid is closed. I found that several times i open lind and as there is no led or signal that the system is on sleep i press the power button. Actually the system trap the power request, show the unlock screen. But when i write the password the system shutdown. This trigger 2 question/suggest/ideas: 1) The system must allow shutdown even on unlock screen ( or be configurable), is no sense request the password to shutdown the computer because never is required in normal use. ( the login is automatic, and i can shutdown from TDE without password). About software active we can look windows 10 that: Send the shutdown signal and open a "waiting for XXX to close" 2) Normally if the screen is off when the uthe user press power, mean that the user want turn on the computer (only that dont know that already is on). So the user don't want shutdown that is the actual behavior. So i suggest that if the screen is off when the user push the button appear the shutdown options (off, hibernate, suspend ) Best regards Christian -- Be Free, Be Linux

by Michael 17 Dec '22

Maybe an odd question? Can you run two, or more, logins for the same user at the same time? (Say the normal one on Crtl-Alt-F7 and an extra one on Crtl-Alt-F5?) I have an app that behaves badly that I’d like to isolate to its own instance of TDE. (There’s no fix for it and when it it goes bad it requires a desktop restart.) Doable? Or anyway to do something equivalent? Thanks all, Michael

Plymouth error
by Thierry de Coulon 17 Dec '22

17 Dec '22

Hello all, As I allready mentioned, I am using MX-Linux at school. I have now installed it on my laptop because it's the only Debian-based distribution I've found where Gnome-Display-Networks is working - which let's me connect my machine with a Microsoft Wireless dongle. To stop any discussion: no, I won't use Ubuntu or Mint, so I haven't tested those. I have installed Trinity on MX and it works well, with one glitch: - If I use TDM (dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity) there seem to be some problem at shutdown, wich leads to - sometime, not always - a failure of X to start at boot (I did not write down the message but it's something about a Plymouth failure). If I log in (cli) and then start X it works. - If I use lightdm there is no problem (except the less friendly greeter). From all this, I have concluded that the problem is linked to the use of Trinity's login screen. While I can live with lightdm, does anyone understand what the problem with plymouth is, and/or if it's possible to get TDM's greeter without plymouth? I seem to remember a time where plymouth had to be installed only for some versions of the greeter - maybe I'm wrong. Thierry

Twitter never seemed worth the time, effort, or emotional investment, to participate. I doubt Mastodon can be much better. Life is short. And yet there are people who do use it, so it must be worthwhile to somebody out there. My question is, Why not just have our cake and eat it, too? If we establish "an official communication channel for our project on Mastodon" (quoting Slavek), does that mean that we must choose between them - one or the other? Are they mutually exclusive? We could have, say, an "unoffical communication channel" on Twitter; maybe not the devs themselves, but there are lots of TDE users out there, and they could take the message to the people on Twitter, the good news that there really is a Linux desktop that is actually worth using. can one auto-fit image previews in konqueror?
by D. R. Evans 25 Nov '22

25 Nov '22

One of the very few things I find annoying about konqueror in TDE is that, when using it as a file manager, if I click on an image file (a .png, for example), the preview it shows me is not correctly sized to the visible pane. Rather, it seems to be displayed, always, at full size... which means that most of the time it doesn't actually fit in the pane and I can see only a portion of the image. I don't think there's any way to change this behaviour, but I thought I'd better ask here before filing a feature request. So, is there some way to change this behaviour so that the image is scaled correctly so that it always fits in the pane? (Fitting images to the pane is the way the konqueror works in plasma5, for example -- although "modern" konqueror has so many other annoyances that I find it unusable; but the "automatic-fit-images-to-the-pane" behaviour is a great improvement on the TDE behaviour described above.) by William Morder 24 Nov '22

24 Nov '22

Okay, so here's my problem. I want a basic calculator, at least the 4 functions, although I don't mind having other goodies, but I really just need a basic calculator for doing simple tasks like figuring out whether I have any money left in my account. I got kcalc-trinity downloaded, managed to change the colors to make it more visible, but now I find that it cannot be resized, nor the size of characters in the display enlarged. If not a Trinity program, then I'd be glad to try a non-TDE program, but there again I run into the same problem with every calculator I've tried. The only other one that I use sometimes is galculator, but while I can enlarge its size, the characters stay so tiny that I cannot read them, cannot make out the difference between x, +, and so on, and the keypad also has unreadable numbers. There was one that I remembered, qalculate, of which there was supposed to be a Trinity version, but neither the Trinity version nor any others (Gnome, gtk, etc.) with download and install. Something about dependencies, it seems, but when I did a search for the deb package, I get only an error page. Is there any calculator that I can resize both the gui frame of the program (not sure if that's the right terminology) as well as the size of the characters? Or is there some way that I could hack the Trinity version of kcalc to make it bigger? See attached screenshot for comparsion of the two top underperformers. Bill

Reliably play a sound without disrupting the screen?
by Michael 23 Nov '22

23 Nov '22

I need a sound played 10 minutes before each hour during the work day, such that it does not interfere with what’s on the screen, grab the mouse, or grab the keyboard. Scheduling it with cron is easy, but I can’t seem to get the sound to play reliably. I’m currently using: /usr/bin/play --no-show-progress --volume .5 /opt/trinity/share/sounds/KDE_Beep_Connect.ogg Sometimes that plays other times it’s silent. I’ve also tried: kaboodle /opt/trinity/share/sounds/KDE_Event_2.ogg Which always plays, but I don’t know how to start it either minimized, closed to the system tray, or some other way so it doesn’t cause issues. I’ve seen some hokey solutions using wmctrl and/or xdotool, but they still pop up the program (kaboodle) before minimizing it. AV isn’t really my forte, and I don’t really care what program works, does anyone have experience doing something like this? Thanks, Michael

TDE Devuan repository glitch
by William Morder 22 Nov '22

22 Nov '22

Not sure what caused this weirdness, but I thought it best to make a report, just in case it actually matters. I was trying to find a desktop calculator that I actually like, and among those that I downloaded was kcalc-trinity, which I've used before. But when I downloaded my list of packages and dependencies, I kept getting an error message: Err:1 http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-testing chimaera/main amd64 kcalc-trinity amd64 4:14.1.0~s244-0debian11.0.0+12 404 Not Found [IP: 37.205.10.16 80] E: Failed to fetch http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-testing/pool/main/… 404 Not Found [IP: 37.205.10.16 80] E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing? After trying apt-get build-dep, and then apt-get update, which did not improve my results, it occurred to me to try changing my sources.list from Devuan Chimaera to Debian Bullseye; and presto! worked like a charm. Some may recall an earlier discussion (when Leslie was attempting a new Devuan installation), I posited my opinion that there is probably no difference between these packages when it comes to third-party repositories (such as Trinity itself). From what I can tell, third-party developers thus far do not create special Devuan packages, and most do not even acknowledge the existence of Devuan, so Debian packages work just fine. For the Trinity repositories, I assume that the link to Chimaera packages is just a redirect to the Debian packages. Otherwise, this would be a reduplication of effort and server space, If this is wrong, I expect to be corrected by somebody who knows better. However, this seems like proof of concept, since the package was available by changing to the Debian links. I do know that Debian and Devuan packages definitely should not be used interchangeably. When Devuan was first forked, this was almost true, except for a few systemd-dependent items, but now they have diverged more and more. These changes do not appear to have prompted third-party developers to create packages specifically for Devuan, but I am sure that this will be changing. It could be that this package alone is missing, or that there is a problem with the link to this server, or that redirection is failing, or whatever. But I did try several times, with the same bad result, and after changing the lines in my sources.list for the Trinity repositories, everything worked like normal. By the way, I am using the PTB repositories now, following Slavek's recent recommendation. Bill

deps-r14 error when installing on MX-Linux
by Thierry de Coulon 17 Nov '22

17 Nov '22

Hello all, I have installed MX-Linux 21 on a laptop (with xfce). For some things I find xfce quite nice to use, but I decided to install TDE too (actually I have one user configured to start xfce and another TDE). I followed the wiki and created a tde.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, downloaded the keyring and apt-get updated. - Everything installed fine (using the preliminary builds) and TDE is running OK - However, when running apt-get update I got this (at the end of the update): Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/cnf-update-db", line 26, in <module> col.create(db) File "/usr/share/command-not-found/CommandNotFound/db/creator.py", line 95, in create self._fill_commands(con) File "/usr/share/command-not-found/CommandNotFound/db/creator.py", line 143, in _fill_commands self._parse_single_contents_file(con, f, fp.stdout) File "/usr/share/command-not-found/CommandNotFound/db/creator.py", line 282, in _parse_single_contents_file priority = component_priorities[component] KeyError: 'deps-r14' It does not seem to hurt, but I wonder what it is. Using the regular stable release has the same effect, commenting all lines in tde.list results in no message, so it's linked to the tde repositories somehow. Thierry

TDE R14.0.13 released, new target...
by Slávek Banko 17 Nov '22

17 Nov '22

Hi all, you might have been used to the fact that after the release of a new version, a new development window was soon opened and new packages started arriving in the PSB repository. You've probably noticed that this time is different. We are planning to move forward and release the first version of the new series - R14.1.0 - at the next release cycle. There are no active plans for another release in the R14.0.x series, but for now we're leaving the possibility open for a R14.0.14 window in case there are some important reasons to release such a version. Therefore, here is important information regarding the apt sources of PSB and PTB. If you would like to get involved now in testing the upcoming R14.1.0, you can set your apt sources to PTB repository and you will get the current state of R14.1.0~pre. You don't have to worry that this is a "testing" version - it's very stable and suitable for everyday use and packages are available for all supported distributions - old stable, stable, testing, unstable. Some time in future, when it will be clear that nothing prevents the next release to be R14.1.0, the content of the PSB repository will be updated to match the PTB. Until then, there will be no activity in the PSB repository. We will inform you before this update is made. If you are using PSB and wish to stay on the current stable release, this is a good time to switch from PSB to official release sources. Thank you for your support! Cheers -- The TDE dev team PSB - Preliminary Stable Builds: https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Preliminary_Stable_Builds PTB - Preliminary Testing Builds: https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Preliminary_Testing_Builds

Can't get rid of spurious TDE menu entry
by Mike Bird 16 Nov '22

16 Nov '22

I can't get rid of a spurious empty KPDF entry in my TDE menu. If I delete or cut it and save it's still there. Otherwise TDE menu editor works correctly and I can add and remove entries. I've looked in ~/.trinity/share/config/* and /usr/share/menu/* and can't find anything that might be causing it. Is there anything else I should check or do? Thanks, --Mike

upgrade starting TDM though not already running
by Felix Miata 12 Nov '22

12 Nov '22

When my /proc/cmdline includes a 3, and/or when # systemctl get-default multi-user.target and TDM is not running, doing an apt-get upgrade that includes a newer tdm, starts tdm, wresting the console from whatever I am doing while the upgrade is in process. I don't want that to happen. It's very disturbing. Is there a way to configure it only to restart, but never start, as a result of an apt/apt-get/aptitude installation or upgrade process? -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. TDM 14.0.13 no-theme problem
by Felix Miata 08 Nov '22

08 Nov '22

I always use useTheme=false in tdmrc. It has been the best theme of any login greeter ever created, until recently, when the login UI became tacky looking with an extra title line. It used to default to Welcome to Trinity at hostname login password That changed to * Trinity Desktop Environment ------------------------------ Welcome to Trinity at hostname login password I don't see a way in tdmrc or TCC to select either one or the other instead of both. Is there a way? The instant case triggering my composing this is on Mageia, but I've seen it on multiple installations, and I don't think all were Mageia. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Repository path change for ArchLinux users
by Slávek Banko 30 Oct '22

30 Oct '22

Hello to all ArchLinux users, in connection with the release of TDE R14.0.13, it is necessary to draw attention to one change that concerns the path to the repository. Since we added support for other architectures and therefore binary packages for multiple architectures are provided, there was a need to modify the path in the repository so that there are individual folders for individual architectures. Therefore you will need to edit your pacman.conf and add "/$arch" to the repository path. See page on TDE Wiki. https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Arch_Trinity_Repository_Installation_Instru… Cheers -- Slávek

kmail and OAUth
by Thierry de Coulon 07 Oct '22

07 Oct '22

Hello all, My school uses Office 365, also for mail. I used to be able to get my mail using imap and be able to answer these mails using Office's smtp. Now they activated two factor authentication and kmail can't access anymore. I had to remove this imap access as it tended to block kmail (that was waiting for me to act on it's error message). I've solved the problem of receiving the mail (which is the most important) by simply forwarding to my usual account (which is linked to my website). However, I have to log in m$ stuff (online) to answer because Oulook refuses mails from my private mail server. It looks like they use something named OAuth and this does not appear to exist in TDE's kmail. Does someone know if it's possible to tweak settings so as to communicate with OAuth? I can try to ask our IT people but they usually simply answer that Linux is not supported and I should run Windows... Thierry
