I think I found a bug. A cockroach that needs to be crushed with extreme, bloody thirsty prejudice. Please launch konq, 1. create a directory. 2. Right click, go to properties 3. Click on the icon button 4. choose applications If I'm correct, it will freeze at about 24 to 26 % whilst caching the icons. Let me know what everyone finds. The power just went out!!! [trinity-users] kde
by BorgLabs - Kate Draven 27 Aug '20

27 Aug '20

Just installed manjaro into the ideapad flex 4 because it has touchscreen support ootb. I choose the kde version. I will never use kde again. It was clunky, slow, pointless complicated (way to many steps to do the same things I do with one click on TDE). I don't understand why they went in this direction. Ok rant over. [trinity-users] questions about upgrade to Beowulf/Buster
by William Morder via trinity-users 27 Aug '20

27 Aug '20

Okay guys, so I am stumped and confuzzled. I just did an upgrade to Devuan Beowulf (= Debian Buster), and everything went fine; except once up and running, I couldn't download more than a few of Trinity's packages. After trying different repositories, and playing with my sources list, I managed to do just a bit better, then I saved the day with some extreme voodoo using about config (scrolling through the manpages to find something that work). I ended up getting enough the Trinity packages to download by using --ignore-hold and dselect-upgrade options. I even searched out the links to deb packages on the developers' repositories, and downloaded them with wget, so that I could try forcing install using dpkg. Now at least (at last) I do have a working system which is a reasonable facsimile of my previous one, but it does seem like it ought to have been easier. For about the past three days now, I've lived in the command-line. Also I would like recommendations for a firewall that displays active connections and rules, etc., like the old Firestarter used to do. I catch all kinds of problems by noticing activity on my firewall, but now I cannot seem to find one that displays active connections, and Firestarter can no longer be hacked to make it work on a newer system. Thanks for any advice or comments, Bill --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: trinity-users-unsubscribe(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net For additional commands, e-mail: trinity-users-help(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net Read list messages on the web archive: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/ Please remember not to top-post: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/mailing_lists/#top-posting

[trinity-users] Project status report - history
by Slávek Banko 25 Aug '20

25 Aug '20

Hi all, before we get back to earlier discussions, let me take a little trip into history and summarize how the state of the project has evolved over time and what are the tasks that await us. Note: If you do not want to take a trip into history, you can wait for the subsequent e-mail with the Summary chapter. -- 2008 / 2009 -- KDE 3.5 development comes to a stop KDE 3.5 development stops. As a KDE 3.5 maintainer for Ubuntu, Tim devotes his efforts to maintaining KDE 3.5 for newer versions of KUbuntu - still under the original name KDE 3.5. Unfortunately, I do not know much about that time. Tim provides repositories that sooner or later would be found as PPAs on the official Ubuntu Launchpad. Tim provides bugtracker and mailing lists that are independent of the Ubuntu world. -- 2010 -- TDE is born! Fork KDE 3.5 is official - Trinity Desktop is here! The first version of TDE (3.5.11) is released. A branch in KDE SVN is used to manage the source code. Other services are provided and donated by Tim. Starting with release 3.5.12, Tim provides QuickBuild (a custom instance of Launchpad). Thank to this, the project has an independent environment for building packages and providing repositories for Debian like distributions. -- 2011 -- Move to TQt TDE 3.5.13 is released - the first version where the TQt interface library is used. It is decided to change the numbering for the new major release - it will be TDE R14.0.0. Work is underway to migrate from KDE SVN to TDE own GIT SCM. -- 2012 -- Development, stable and SRU releases Because TDE 3.5.13 contained many minor but also major issues, a repository was created to provide packages with backported patches from the main R14.0.0 development branch - the basis for working on a stable branch was created. Initially, only individual packages were created, but gradually all packages were added and a complete release of TDE 3.5.13.1 is created. Migration to the GIT is complete! The project has all the services on its own servers - provided and donated by Tim. There is a system of mirrors where individual mirrors are provided and donated by the owners of these mirrors. -- 2013 -- Work on upcoming R14.0.0 continues TDE 3.5.13.2 is released. Many KDE => TDE renames are being done for the upcoming R14.0.0. -- 2014 -- R14.0.0 is finally here + PSB TDE R14.0.0 is released! A base framework for major, minor and maintenance releases is established. Due to air conditioning issues on Tim's infrastructure and the temporary shutdown of some services, alternative repositories with builders independent of QuickBuild are created - repository known as Preliminary Stable Builds (PSB). The infrastructure for PSB is provided and donated by Slávek. Mirror PSB is provided and donated by Jan Černohorský (mirror.xcer.cz). The structure of official mirrors is improved to reduce overloading the connectivity of primary servers when a new version is released. Mike Bird provides and donates the primary mirror. -- 2015 -- Maintenance releases TDE R14.0.1 and R14.0.2 are released. Due to low funds, some services are shutdown on Tim's infrastructure - regular automatic creation of Ubuntu LiveCDs with TDE. Access to Nightly Builds is restricted. And there are some hardware issues with the servers on Tim's infrastructure. Slávek manages to get a VPS machine from vpsFree as a donation! This makes it possible to create a new highly optimized primary redirector. Thanks to the cache on the redirector, the process of releasing new releases has become significantly faster. It also provides a fallback server so that development and services can continue. -- 2016 -- More maintenance releases TDE R14.0.3 and R14.0.4 are released. Development is progressing steadily. Infrastructure is stable - Tim's primary site, mirrors with primary from Mike, VPS from vpsFree, Slávek's infrastructure for PSB. There are small donations from contributors. Tim is busy with other projects for most of the year. -- 2017 -- A quiet year for TDE + PTB No new release of TDE :-( Development is slow and mostly limited to keep packages into a building state. Most of the developers are very busy through the year. Nightly Builds don't work properly for a long time and due to Tim absence, it's difficult to add new distributions. Therefore the Preliminary Testing Build (PTB) repository has been set up to replace Night Builds. The packages are built on the same infrastructure as PSB. Both repositories - PSB and PTB - have now been placed on the primary redirector - VPS from vpsFree, making them more accessible and giving them some sort of official recognition. -- 2018 -- TDE lives on. TGW becomes the new developer's home TDE R14.0.5 is released - the project has not die after all! Thanks to VPS donated by vpsFree, we introduced a new development collaboration tool - TDE Gitea Workspace (TGW). This greatly improves the ability to contribute to the project and new contributors have joined. Problems with services hosted on Tim's primary infrastructure are becoming progressively bigger, causing issues to the project as a whole given only Tim can manage those services. Slávek and Michele come up with plans for an anternative TDE infrastructure should Tim be no longer available in future. -- 2019 -- New life for TDE and a new project leader! TDE R14.0.6 and R14.0.7 are released. Thanks to VPS donated by vpsFree, the TDE Weblate Translation Workspace (TWTW) is introduced. This greatly simplifies and improves translation work and let users translates TDE into their own languages from a browser seamlessly. Tim arranges for the donation of a new TDE box from IntegriCloud! A powerful machine on the POWER9 architecture which is fully manageable and accessible to other core project members. No more "one man weak link" in the infrastructure. Migration of services from Tim's infrastructure to the new TDE box is started. Tim agrees to pass the role of project leader to Slávek. A new primary archive is created, the layout is changed and cleaning is performed. As a result, primary archive is no longer dependent on QuickBuild as it would make it impossible to release new versions for current distributions. Reprepro is now used to manage the repositories. The official packages are now based on PSB. This also allows smoother synchronization of new releases to mirrors. The new archive is located on Slávek's home server, which maintains and donates it. -- 2020 -- TDE 10th anniversary! TDE R14.0.8 is released - we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first release of TDE! Although there are several tasks for migrating services from Tim's infrastructure to Integricloud's new TDE box, the services needed for development are working properly. Several new contributors to code and translations have joined and development is at its peak in the last 6 or 7 years. The project is doing well! R14.0.9 is planned for a Q4 release. Welcome back from a trip into history! A summary of the state of the infrastructure will be in the subsequent e-mail... stay tuned. Cheers -- Slávek

Would someone review the changes I made to: https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/MX_Linux_Trinity_Repository_Installation_In… Typo’s?, instructions make sense?, file download works? (seems to in Firefox), file not destroyed by browser XYZ?, file is destroyed in browser XYZ? Thanks, Michael PS: Limitation of the Wiki software requires uploading the file under the wrong name. [trinity-users] A near windows 10 suicide & The ideapad flex 4 of Death - A Horror Story
by BorgLabs - Kate Draven 19 Aug '20

19 Aug '20

Ok, SO... A neighbour, decide to give me his ideapad flex 4, after seriously contemplating suicide rather than continue using win10. I replaced it with a thinkpad and Ali's Big Daddy PCLOS roll. He's very happy, his employer has NO idea Bob's sudden increase in productivity has anything to do with linux. So all is well. I have cleansed the ideapad of the diseased demon and installed Big Daddy PCLOS. All is well expect the touch screen doesn't work. Anyone know of any packages I need to install? I seem to have all of them. Until the ideas (pun intended) begin rolling in, I'll continue my research. Me 20 year old "top of duh line" for duh day, computer has told me, he will be retiring to the TV room to become a multimedia machine and complain about how bad television has become. So it's time to build a new one. I have all the parts save for one. I want to use a soundblaster audigy like card (the one in the old geezer is 32 bit pci), I need one that will fit a modern slot. Has anyone any experience with a good SB audigy like card? Definetly want to stay with soundblaster. I would like the collective's input. No banana bread recipes please. [trinity-users] Thinkpad X1, Ubuntu 20, trinity resume, hibernate and network card

Hi I have one annoying thing left in my trinity installation, when I resume, after hibernation or suspend, the network is not only disconnected but has to be restarted via sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service The culprit is most likely systemd However sometimes I have to disable the card in the trinity network card and enable it again. Can I mind this operation to a key? And in general can I somehow improve whit the sudo solution? [trinity-users] KMail IMAP Sent Folder
by deloptes 13 Aug '20

13 Aug '20

Hi, is someone using KMail actively with IMAP? For a long long time I see sent mails go to the local Sent folder, but not to the IMAPs Sent folder. How do I tell KMail to use the IMAPs Sent folder? And first of all why does it go to the local Sent folder when the SMTP server is in the configuration? I guess it is some asynchronous job doing the sending from Outgoing ... but in general it is a mystery to me. [trinity-users] Something fishy with fish://
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 09 Aug '20

Hi all! I just ran into a problem with konqueror and fish:// : konqueror only shows the files till the first filename with an invalid UTF8-characters, all following files are not shown. I just came around this when mounting old pre-UTF8-backups on the server and tried to access the files from TDE. I can list an access the files on the server. Anybody else seeing this, too? Oh, whne I am on it: I was under the impression that TDE also had sshfs:// protocol some time ago. Is this gone now? When I enter sshfs://... in konqueror it opens a terminal ... [trinity-users] Purging non needed TDE packages
by Michael 05 Aug '20

05 Aug '20

Somewhat on a whim, I’m trying to figure out what laptop packages I can remove from my desktop. Having already removed touchpad-indicator, I came across klaptopdaemon-trinity as a good candidate. # aptitude search '~d laptop' i A klaptopdaemon-trinity - battery monitoring and management for laptops using TDE So, did a dry run, and it wants to remove all of TDE from the computer. (output below) So, uhm, what am I missing here? TDE isn’t really dependent on a laptop daemon, right? My desktop does not need that package, right? What’s the proper command to remove it? Thanks, Best, Michael michael@local [~/data/trash]# apt-get purge --dry-run klaptopdaemon-trinity NOTE: This is only a simulation! apt-get needs root privileges for real execution. [trinity-users] Fonts question
by Janek Stolarek 05 Aug '20

In the TCC Fonts module by default the fonts are labelled simply as "serif" and "sans-serif", instead of concrete font names. How can I learn which exact fonts are being used? Bonus question: and how can I add support for Chinese signs to these fonts? Japanese seems to work fine, but some Chinese signs show up as crossed boxes. [trinity-users] Loading setting on logon takes long time
by Janek Stolarek 04 Aug '20

04 Aug '20

I've recently set up a new machine with TDE. For reasons I can't figure out, when I log into TDE on the new machine the startup screen needs about 4-5 seconds to get past the "Loading settings" step. On the old machine this takes a split second, so on the new machine this is several times slower. The new machine has a faster SDD and comparable CPU (more cores than the old one, but that's probably not relevant here) so I don't see a good reason why this is so slow. I know there is a setting in TCC to disable configuration checking on login, which I did. It seems to *sometimes* work, i.e. occasionally "Loading settings" will take a split second, but for the most time it still takes 4-5 seconds. Does anyone have a clue what's going on here? [trinity-users] Upload file to Wiki?
by Michael 04 Aug '20

04 Aug '20

I’m trying to upload the tde.pm for MX Linux to the Wiki. Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, webp. Okay, whatever, I can rename it to tde.png, except the Wiki is a perfectionist: “File extension ".png" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (application/xml).” Would one of the Wiki admins add both .txt and whatever extension handles (application/xml) to the permitted file upload types list? Or just turn the MIME type matching off. [trinity-users] Apt-get or aptitude to install the TDE?
by Ken Heard 04 Aug '20

04 Aug '20

I note that in the instructions for installing TDE R14.0.8 say to run as root the following: apt-get update aptitude install TDE-trinity I am confused by the fact that two different installation applications are used here, apt get and aptitude. It was always my understanding that those two apps should not be mixed because they are not compatible. I have always used apt for all the desktops I ever had including for installing TDE and never had any problem. Is aptitude better for TDE than apt? I would prefer to use apt because that is what I plan to use for installing Debian Buster on a couple of desktops in the near future. Ken Heard

[trinity-users] Mounting issues
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 03 Aug '20

03 Aug '20

Hi all! I've just upgraded some old machines and ran into a issue with mounting flash storage devices: pmount only: mounting/unmounting works as expected, but pmount leaves for each plugged device a folder with one file in /media/*/.created_by_pmount - is there an easy way to tell pmount to remove that file+folder when the device is unplugged? udisks2 only: no folder in /media/ is created, mounting fails. I need to create e.g. /media/usb /media/usb0, then mounting/unmounting works. But this is not consistent across machines, some maschines mount flash devices under /media/<username>/... - there mounting/inmounting works, if the folder /media/user/ exists. But how/where can I unify the behaviour, so it always mounts devices on /media/<device> ? [trinity-users] KMix can't control audio volume
by Janek Stolarek 01 Aug '20

01 Aug '20

I'm setting up TDE-based Debian on a new machine and I've run into a problem I have not experienced on any other of my machines with similar configurations: KMix can't control audio volume. More specifically, I have two audio outputs: an HDMI one (via nVidia card with proprietary drivers) and a front panel audio jack. Sound works correctly on both outputs and I can control it with pavucontrol (PulseAudio sound mixer). However: 1. KMix master slider that appears after clicking on the tray icon does absolutely nothing. 2. When I open the mixer window in KMix it recognizes PulseAudio as an audio device. There is just one volume slider and it does nothing. 3. Another recognized audio device is HD-Audio Generic. This has a bunch of output sliders and the sliders work correctly (i.e. they change the volume) when the sound is directed to headphones, but not when it's directed to HDMI (output change done via pavucontrol). 4. The final audio device recognized by KMix is HDA Nvidia. This only has seven toggles labales IEC958. First toggle mutes/unmutes the sound, the remaining ones don't seem to be doing anything. I'm puzzled. This is the first time I see KMix master slider not working at all, even though I have pulseaudio set up on all my other machines with TDE. Any thoughts or suggestions? [trinity-users] What does TDE Buster use to escalate permissions?
by Michael 29 Jul '20

29 Jul '20

Issue: In TDE in MX18 (stretch) the MX Tools apps would open in TDE. In TDE in MX19 (buster) the MX Tools that need to run as root will not open in TDE. The behavior is click the menu item and nothing happens (e.g. do not get any prompts for password). MX Dev: “What does TDE Buster use to escalate permissions for their apps that need it?” “We did switch them to using a wrapper called mx-pkexec to keep the tools working on Buster after Debian removed gksu and went more to policykit-based privileges.” This isn’t huge, really just an annoyance, as I can login to Xfce to run any of the MX Tools I need... Example Menu Command: su-to-root -X -c mx-packageinstaller Copied mx-pkexec, su-to-root, and other called items below. I tried the example command, it seems to need a GUI, as it borks with 'wrong password' (when the root password is correct). Any thoughts would be really appreciated. [trinity-users] Kmail attachments question
by Janek Stolarek 25 Jul '20

A quick question about KMail attachments. By default when I click on a (PDF) attachment KMail asks whether to save it or open with KPDF. I have accidentally marked the "remember my choice" checkbox. [trinity-users] Setting mouse speed?

I just realized I don't know how to set mouse speed in TDE. Control center allows to set acceleration but not speed. [trinity-users] MX-TDE edition options
by Michael 23 Jul '20

23 Jul '20

Hey all, I’ve reached out to the MX Linux group and asked: How to add a DE to the MX Package Installer? https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=59309 The response is pretty positive and I think it’s at the point of needing a TDE developer to contact their lead developer to work out what/which options are available and what would be the next step. Copy/Pasting current replies: ########### by Michael-IDA » Sat Jul 18, 2020 8:14 pm [me] I'm not a dev, but there has been interest by the TDE (Trinity Desktop Environment) folks to get added into the 'official' MX build. What, or who, can I point the TDE devs to? by Jerry3904 » Sat Jul 18, 2020 8:28 pm [Administrator] The Lead Dev: Dolphin Oracle. by andyprough » Sat Jul 18, 2020 9:16 pm [User] By the way, TDE is extremely easy to add to MX - just add the repos and the gpg signing key from the Debian installation page (https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Debian_Trinity_Repository_Installation_Inst…), and then apt update, and apt install tde-trinity. Works very well on MX. by Stevo » Sat Jul 18, 2020 10:49 pm [Developer] That makes it simple to add to MX PI scripts, but are they looking for real "official" approval from MX, or just being added to the installer? Maybe they could work with us to set up an official MX-TDE edition, if they're interested, though of course the XFCE-specific MX tools will again have to modified for TDE right after dolphin_oracle has adapted them for the upcoming KDE release. It would probably need both a 32 and a 64-bit release. ########### For whatever I’m capable, I’ll help. [trinity-users] what is "platform reset"?
by Felmon Davis 18 Jul '20

18 Jul '20

greets! I have a new notebook I want to install Debian/Trinity on. 'Secure Boot' is turned on. maybe this doesn't account for the problems I'm having but my question is about it. in the BIOS I can turn it off but it says doing so "requires platform reset." turning it off within Windows simply reboots to the BIOS. I can't figure out if this is just another word for 'reboot' or does it have other consequences? googling yields no clear (or trustworthy) answer. it's an Asus Zenbook with Windows 10 Home; BIOS is American Megatrends version 300. f. -- Felmon Davis Verbum sat sapienti. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: trinity-users-unsubscribe(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net For additional commands, e-mail: trinity-users-help(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net Read list messages on the web archive: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/ Please remember not to top-post: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/mailing_lists/#top-posting

[trinity-users] Inconsistent font sizes
by Janek Stolarek 18 Jul '20

18 Jul '20

I have a question about configuring font sizes in TDE Control Centre. I would expect that setting a given font size under a given screen resolution will always produce the same rendering result. That however is not the case - see attached screenshots. These were taken on two different machines running a FHD resolution. As you can see font sizes are set to be identical on both system but the results of font rendering are totally different between the systems. I am guessing that this is because the rendering engine is trying to somehow compensate for different physical sizes of the actual screens (15,6" on the laptop vs. 24" on the desktop) but the end result is far from what I want. There's a setting to force a font DPI of either 96 or 120 and the result is that it indeed makes the font on the laptop much much smaller and seemingly consistent with what the desktop shows. I would, however, want things the other way around, i.e. set the desktop to the same rendering results as on the laptop. Any way I can set a DPI different than the predefined options? I have Debian/Trinity installed on a Zenbook UX330 which is why I thought it safe to attempt it on this Zenbook UX433FAC-A5348T but my attempts have failed. the installer craps out and sends me to the commandline. Does Debian have any kind of configuration option that can make 'apt upgrade' try harder to download all packages instead of all except one that for whatever mirror failure reason fails, and halting the upgrade process because that one file didn't download? [trinity-users] Does Trinity run on Debian Testing?
by Janek Stolarek 15 Jun '20

I just got myself a new PC but sadly some of the newer hardware is not yet supported in Debian Stable. [trinity-users] r14-xdg-update script problem
by L.S. McCarty 10 Jun '20

10 Jun '20

I'm a long-time TDE user who just updated to the final TDE 14.0.8 from the 14.0.8 development version. I'm using a Debian sid version with kernel 5.6.0-7.1-liquorix-amd64 which has been working well. The update went well and everything appears to be working fine (not too surprised there as the development versions were good) but there is an issue at startup. There are 3 notices that come up that indicate the r4-xdg-update script has not completed successfully. I've restarted about 6 or 7 times but it hasn't gone away. It says "error code 9 Common failures include file and directory permissions" The file "r14-xgd-update-validation-test9.txt" contains the text below <Filename>kde-kpdf_part.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-ksensors.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-ksensors.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-superkaramba.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-fsview.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-kbiff.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-kbiff.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-kpdf_part.desktop</Filename> I'm not sure exactly how to proceed but expect the solution is some relatively simple editing of some TDE configuration files. Please advise. Thank you in advance for any assistance rendered. L. [trinity-users] konqueror rocks
by Marvin Jones via trinity-users 06 Jun '20

06 Jun '20

I'm build a linux workstation for my wife -- her first linux box. Since her last immersion in command line usage was back in CP/M day, and then DOS before Windows, I am trying to set her up with as many GUI solutions as possible. konqueror is, of course, a prime choice! We both work on web sites, and move "stuff" to and fro a VPS we share. In my own usage I've been using `sshfs` to mount the remote file system on a mount point in my $HOME -- do whatever I needed to do -- then unmount the remote file system. ... all at the command line. An annoyance I've always cursed is the inability of `cp`, `mv`, or even `rsync` to replicate the from_file permissions to the to-file's permissions with the `sshfs` mounts -- because the owning userids are different between the two file systems. Even tho', immediately after getting the error message from `cp`, I can `chmod` the permissions to what I want without any error. sigh... That command line Miky-Maus was not something I wanted to foist on my wife. So, I spent maybe an hour today trying to find a way around the problem in general. No joy. So, for the first time in my testing, I fired up konqueror with two panes: one pane on $HOME/ amd the other pane on the already-mounted remote file system. Then I copied from a local directory a large collection of files with many, many different possible permissions set all the way through the public permissions. I was going to go through the "right click on the file" => "Properties" => "permissions" => owner|group|others change process to make a write up for her to follow. KONQUEROR ROCKS! The file were all copied up to the remote file system WITH THE ORIGINAL FILE'S PERMISSIONS!!! KONQUEROR ROCKS! Thank you KDE; Thank you TDE; Thank you Trinity!! (Gee... I sure hope that's not a bug!!! If so, DON'T FIX IT!!!) Life is good! [trinity-users] Problem with twin and recent Firefox repainting when switching desktops
by Snidely Whiplash 02 Jun '20

02 Jun '20

When switching virtual desktops back to the one where Firefox is open, when certain pages are displaying on the active tab, the window contents do not repaint until moving the mouse over a mouseover effect (e.g. a hoverable link) changes the window status. The window then shows its contents. This started for me with Firefox 73, got somewhat better with Firefox 74 (could only reproduce it on one page, a specific Vbulletin forum listing) and got worse than ever with Firefox 75. Now it happens with most pages that have a list of hoverable links. For example Vbulletin forum listings, and even https://www.kernel.org This does not happen with Fluxbox, seems to be only with TDE/twin. I can reproduce it on both my Manjaro and Linux From Scratch systems. I thought maybe enabling the compositing ("composition manager") might help with this (I build support for it, but I don't enable it) but it neither helps nor harms. A previous cause of this in Firefox was "focusmanager.testmode" but that's set to false now and not applicable. Anybody else seeing this behaviour, or know of any settings or command line arguments for twin that might change this paint behaviour? Thanks,

If Konqueror is set to sort by type or mimetype, the sort indicator will appear on the appropriate column from then on, but the actual files will be sorted alphabetically. Hi This is a bizarre problem which I did not have in earlier trinity versions. I use the fn F1 key to silence my audio, but then I have to use the *kmixer* (either pulse audio or HDA Intel) to reactive the speaker, the FN keys wouldn't do it, however in earlier version, just raising the volume would open the speaker, now it does not. [trinity-users] My tdewalletmanager suddenly stopped working.
by J Leslie Turriff 12 May '20

12 May '20

I use tdewalletmanager as a convenience to store my passwords for kmail and konqueror (fish:). Last night I refreshed my Trinity installation, and everything was working fine (through several login/logout iterations), but the second time I logged in today, suddenly tdewalletmanager didn't start, and kmail prompted me for my mail service passwords. I shut down kmail, then tried to start tdewalletmanager, but it would not start from the menu or the command line. I was able to start it by using 'open with...' in konqueror on kdewallet.kwl, but though the file is 1.3K, kwallet manager shows no file tree! It appears that tdewalletmanager can no longer read my wallet files. I noticed that the privileges for that file were set to -rw-rw-rw- and set them to -rw------ in case that was an issue, but that didn't help, though now I can start tdewalletmanager from the command line. What should I do to find out what's gone wrong? [trinity-users] TDE celebrating its 10th anniversary with new R14.0.8 release!
by Slávek Banko 03 May '20

03 May '20

Ten years ago today, the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) saw the release of its first version (3.5.11). Lot of things have happened since that day but TDE has continued to grow and flourish throughout the years. Today the project is healthier than ever, with dedicated self-hosted servers, regular releases, modern collaboration tools and a vibrant community of users and enthusiasts. The development team is pleased to celebrate TDE's 10th birthday by announcing the immediate availability of the new TDE R14.0.8 release. TDE is a complete software desktop environment designed for Unix-like operating systems, intended for computer users preferring a traditional desktop model, and is free/libre software. R14.0.8 is the eighth maintenance release of the R14.0 series, and is built on and improves the previous R14.0.7 version. Maintenance releases are intended to promptly bring bug fixes to users, while preserving overall stability through the avoidance of both major new features and major codebase re-factoring. R14.0.8 Release Notes This section highlights some of the most important fixes introduced by this maintenance release. Bug fixes * Fixed avahi support * Fixed parsing of CPU cores frequency on some hardware * Fixed parsing of battery information on some hardware * Fixed detection of closing thelid on some hardware * Fixed incorrect update of KNote "last modified" field * Fixed several FTBFS caused by newer library versions * Fixed K3B crashes when trying to write an audio CD with cd text * Fixed tdenetworkmanager crashes Enhancements * Many translation updates * Several packages have been migrated to CMake build system * For some packages have been dropped the automake build system * Added option to disable tdekbdledsync * Added option to select default file manager * The selected default terminal is also used for Open terminal here * Improved LibreSSL support * Improved musl libc support * Improved support for DilOS distribution * Improved support for XDG folders * Improved support for Pinebook Pro * Initial work to support reproducible builds * Initial support for translating desktop files using Weblate * Using Ninja build for Cmake building on FreeBSD * Dropped Kerry and code related to Beagle search Security * CVE-2019-14744: Solved similar cases of arbitrary code execution from .desktop files The full version of the release notes is available at https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Release_Notes_For_R14.0.8 The complete list of bugs fixed in this release is available at these locations (please note that two lists complement each others, they are not duplicates): * TGW issue list https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tde/issues/27 * Bugzilla reports https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=3060&hide_resolve… A detailed commit change log is also available at https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Changelog_For_R14.0.8 Useful notes on upgrading Please read through the following notes before upgrading. If applicable to your system, follow the recommended steps. https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/index.php?title=Release_Notes_For_R14.0.8#U… Getting TDE Installation instructions and binary packages are immediately available for Debian and Ubuntu. Packages for RedHat/CentOs, Fedora, Mageia, OpenSUSE, and PCLinuxOS are being built by their respective maintainers and may be already available or will be soon. Live CDs with TDE R14.0.8 preinstalled are or will be available soon on the LiveCDs page. FreeBSD Support TDE continues to offer support for FreeBSD, although still partial given some of the new issues that have arisen with the latest versions of FreeBSD. The TDE team will try their best to improve support for FreeBSD but progress will probably be slow. Additional developers or contributors willing to help porting the remaining features and applications are always welcome. Credits and acknowledgements We thanks all the people that are (or have been) involved in making TDE the great desktop environment that it is. We would like to thank IntegriCloud for kindly providing a powerful physical server based on a secure POWER9 architecture that serves as the new TDE primary host and as a very powerful builder for ppc64el packages. We would like to thank vpsFree for kindly providing free hosting for some of the TDE services, most notably our self-hosted TDE Gitea Workspace and TDE Weblate Translation Workspace. We would like to thank all the people who have contributed to improve translations for many languages. We are looking forward for further contributions in future. https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Release_Notes_For_R14.0.8#Translators Contribute to TDE development The TDE development team is small but friendly. If you wish to participate in the TDE development process, please visit the Get involved page for additional information. There many things you can contribute to, from documentation review to bug fixes as well as brand new software features or applications. Feedback from our users is also an integral part of a large, user-experience oriented project such as TDE. Whether you want to report a bug, suggest an improvement or simply let us know your opinion about TDE, please feel free to contact us. Three good places to start communication are the official TGW site at https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea (user guide at https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/TDE_Gitea_Workspace ),the mailing lists at https://www.trinitydesktop.org/mailinglist.php and the bug tracker at https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/. Donate to the TDE Project Creating TDE requires significant computing resources and bandwidth. Please consider helping to keep us online with a donation on our donations page at https://www.trinitydesktop.org/donate.php. Without your financial assistance, TDE would not be possible! Join us in congratulating TDE on its 10th birthday!!

[trinity-users] How to add to the File Associations for directories/folders?
by J Leslie Turriff 01 May '20

01 May '20

When I right-click on a directory and select "Open with..." I see a list of applications, which are mostly file-management related: FileLight, TDESVN, etc. I want to add VLC to the list, but I can't figure out how to use File Associations for this; there seems to be no entry for "folder" or "directory". What am I missing? [trinity-users] Trinity Desktop Environment R14.0.8 released, new target R14.0.9 started...
by Slávek Banko 01 May '20

01 May '20

Hi all, soon after the release of R14.0.8, a window was opened to work on R14.0.9. Although several commits have already been pushed, building packages for R14.0.9 will begin later, because we now want to leave it for a while on the final R14.0.8. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. The packages in both repositories will be identical for some time, so it is smooth to change the apt source if you want. Otherwise, we will be very happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. I intend to begin building R14.0.9 preliminary packages on May 8th. Thank you for your attention :) Cheers -- Slávek

[trinity-users] Scaling kalzium?
by Thierry de Coulon 30 Apr '20

30 Apr '20

I guess not everyone uses it, but I rely on kalzium often. I still find the layout of kalzium-trinity better than the one of KDE-trinity (KDE 5), however the periodic table does not scale. I have no idea how the code looks (and would probably not understand it) so maybe it's too much works, or is impossible. I've looked in the apps directory, but the table seems to be created from within the code, so I get no idea why the table does not scale when the windows goes full screen. If there was a way to bring kalzium to 2020, I'd be happy to help. Hello, since upgrading from tde 3.5.13 to 14 and ubuntu precise to xenial (linux-4.4.0 and 4.15.0), the OK button in the "Advanced Permissions" dialog of Konquereor is not enabled any more. The file system is ext4 with acl and user_xattr enabled. Is this my local problem, or has any one else this issue too? Thanks Stef

[trinity-users] Need a little konqueror help
by Marvin Jones via trinity-users 29 Apr '20

29 Apr '20

I want to open konqueror from the command line -- in split screen -- with one panel open in a default directory (e.g. $HOME/somewhere/) and the other panel open in a command line given directory (e.g. /some/where/else/). I have the profile saved - called "rfs_mount' I seem to be able to load the command line given directory in one or the other panels -- after saving a fresh copy of the profile with one or the other panel "active" at the time the save is done. But, I have been unable to specify the default directory (e.g. $HOME/somewhere/) in the _other_ panel. My semi-successful attempt: konqueror --profile rfs_mount $HOME/VPS/ ... but only the one panel is loaded, and the other is "un-located." By "un-located", I mean it's not $HOME/ , or / , or anything. Unless I'm missing something obvious, one cannot specify _two_ URIs on the command line. Right? I've tried specifying a home page for the not-active panel before making the other panel active and saving the profile. No joy. Has anyone been down this rabbit hole? Thank you. [trinity-users] [quite OT] TDE shirts
by Thierry de Coulon 26 Apr '20

26 Apr '20

I like wearing polo shirts (they make T-shirts too actually) with something about Linux and I have found good, embroidered shirts from a Hungarian maker (he does the embroidering, not the shirts actually). I'm not putting the address here because I don't want that you believe I would be making business, I am just a customer there. The point is he asked for suggestions, so I suggested TDE shirts - and he answered "I was a big fan of KDE3, so Trinity is close to my heart. I'm ready to make Trinity Desktop shirts, if the project can help me to promote them on the official website. Without the reach of the users, we won't send a piece for sure." Well, so the question is to know if there would be any interrest and if "promoting" shirts on the website would be desired/possible. I don't suppose it would, but I just told him i'd ask. [trinity-users] setting static ip in network
by Marvin Jones via trinity-users 20 Apr '20

20 Apr '20

Years go by between the times I install a new Ubuntu/Trinty. It is now time again -- this time to build a machine to replace my wife's antique Win XP. I just did the install with Trinity's CD image Ubuntu 18.02/Trinity 14.07. I want to set a static IP for the box -- and get rid of the DHCP crap. All the searching either shows Make changes to the /etc/netplan yaml file -- there isn't any - just an empty directory! -or- "Click on top right network icon and select settings corresponding to the network interface you wish to assign with the static IP address." --- ya, well, this is Trinity. ..and, of course NONE of this resembles anything I remember from hacking my Ubuntu 16.04 with Trinity from a WAY LONG time ago. Could someone please point me where to start? Thank you! [trinity-users] Lazarus IDE
by Vasileios Vlachos via trinity-users 18 Apr '20

18 Apr '20

Dear friends, TDE looks really amazing. Just a quick and a tricky question, I am afraid. Lazarus IDE [1] is a powerful tool for developing Object Pascal applications. It has a strong and enthusiastic community and it gains a lot of popularity lately. Practically it supports any OS, cpu architecture and graphical toolkit you can think of. Unfortunately, every time I am trying to debug an application in TDE, I keep getting the following message and crash /"Project raised exception class 'External: SIGSEGV'.// // // In file '../sysdeps/x86_64/multiarch/../strlen.S' at line 120// // //The file "/build/glibc-OTsEL5/glibc-2.27/sysdeps/x86_64/strlen.S" was not found.// //Do you want to locate it yourself?"/ When I am trying to execute my precompiled//application I get the /" The application gtk2-tqt-engine (BigProject-gtk-tqt-application) crashed and caused the signl 11 (SIGSEV). "/ As I said in any other OS (Windows) and in many different linux distros (Mint, MX) with different Window Managers (Mate, Xfce, etc) it runs without a hitch. Any ideas? I am trying with latest TDE R14.0.7 / Mint 19.3 Best Regards, Vasileios Vlachos [1] Lazarus IDE: https://www.lazarus-ide.org/

[trinity-users] r14-xdg-update script error when TDM is starting TDE
by Stefan Krusche 15 Apr '20

15 Apr '20

Good Day everyone, after the latest update and after I logged in into TDM some xmessage boxes popped up before starting TDE and informed me of some errors. The second time I start my PC and TDE it's only one xmessage box. Clicking away these boxes result in starting a TDE session normally and I haven't observed any problems yet. What can I do to satisfy r14-xdg-update or at least silence it? Any hint is appreciated. Kind regards, Stefan Krusche ====== More Information ===== I've only found this information regarding the complaint of this r14-xdg-update script in /var/tmp/tdecache-$USER: $ cat r14-xdg-update-validation-test9.txt <Filename>kde-KMail.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-kwrite.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-konsole.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-ksensors.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-ksystemlog.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-konsole.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-ksystemlog.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-KMail.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-knetworkmanager.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-Home.desktop</Filename> <Filename>kde-kwrite.desktop</Filename> And there are a couple of lines in ~/.xsession-errors which don't tell me more than "error code is 9" which seems to mean that test number 9 of that script failed (see above). That R14_UPDATE_TEST9 basically greps the tdemenu-config-file: grep "<Filename>kde-" "$USER_DIR/.config/menus/applications-tdemenuedit.menu" and accordingly finds some entries because there are some with that string, old config files brought from good old kde3 which exist under ~/ and as they are properly registered with tdemenu always have worked. AIUI it doesn't matter what the file name really is but I never got familiar with the way the configuration of TDE's menus is implemented in XML and so on. If I'd rename the files so that r14-xdg-update is happy and change the entries in applications-tdemenuedit.menu accordingly the "error" probably would vanish I guess. But maybe r14-xdg-update shouldn't complain in the first place or make it clear what actually the problem is which I don't see. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: trinity-users-unsubscribe(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net For additional commands, e-mail: trinity-users-help(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net Read list messages on the web archive: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/ Please remember not to top-post: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/mailing_lists/#top-posting

Hi all, I would like to remind you that R14.0.8 is planned for the end of April. There will not be significant changes, some new cmake conversions, cleaning, many minor fixes and also a lot of work on translations. If you want to contribute, now is a good time to test and also to work on translations. Main packages freeze is scheduled for April 10, applications should freeze on April 17 and final freeze on April 24. I hope everything goes well. Thank you for your support and help.
