TDE R14.1.7 release postponed by a week
by Michele Calgaro 25 Oct '26

25 Oct '26

Hi, we are sorry to announce that the release of TDE R14.1.7 has been postponed by a week and will happen on Nov 1 instead of today. Building all the packages for the various distributions is taking longer than we initially anticipated and rather than announcing a partially built release, we prefer to wait an extra week. The development of R14.1.8 is unaffected by the delay, since the team is already working on it. Cheers Michele

KPDF Signal 11
by Thierry de Coulon 08 Oct '26

08 Oct '26

Hello, I've got a PDF (boarding passes) that causes KPDF to crash (SIGSEV signal 11). Other PDFs print fine, that particular one can be printed from qpdfview, or will print correctly from KPDF only after having been printed to pdf from master pdf editor. I've got the gdb crash report, it is quite long and I am not sure if there would be something to bebug and where I could (should) post it. Here is the start that seems to relate to TDe libraries: [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] Using host libthread_db library "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libthread_db.so.1". ==== (gdb) bt ==== [TDECrash handler] #6 0x00007f488b5ad785 in FoFiType1C::convertToType0(char*, void (*)(void*, char*, int), void*) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #7 0x00007f488b542ee5 in PSOutputDev::setupEmbeddedCIDType0Font(GfxFont*, Ref*, GString*) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #8 0x00007f488b54d523 in PSOutputDev::setupFont(GfxFont*, Dict*) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #9 0x00007f488b54d8c8 in PSOutputDev::setupFonts(Dict*) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #10 0x00007f488b54d9bf in PSOutputDev::setupResources(Dict*) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #11 0x00007f488b54dddb in PSOutputDev::writeDocSetup(Catalog*, int, int) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #12 0x00007f488b54f1d3 in PSOutputDev::init(void (*)(void*, char*, int), void*, PSFileType, XRef*, Catalog*, int, int, PSOutMode, int, int, int, int, int) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #13 0x00007f488b54f4a8 in PSOutputDev::PSOutputDev(char*, XRef*, Catalog*, int, int, PSOutMode, int, int, int, int, int, int) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #14 0x00007f488b50c2f5 in PDFGenerator::print(KPrinter&) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #15 0x00007f488b4cf160 in KPDF::Part::doPrint(KPrinter&) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #16 0x00007f488b4d1b31 in KPDF::Part::slotPrint() () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #17 0x00007f488b4d1be8 in KPDF::Part::tqt_invoke(int, TQUObject*) () from /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/libkpdfpart.so #18 0x00007f48916cebeb in TQObject::activate_signal(TQConnectionList*, TQUObject*) () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libtqt-mt.so.3 #19 0x00007f4891970781 in TQSignal::signal(TQVariant const&) () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libtqt-mt.so.3 #20 0x00007f48916e2a30 in TQSignal::activate() () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libtqt-mt.so.3 #21 0x00007f48916ed790 in ?? upgrade was bumpy - a few leftover problems
by William Morder 05 Oct '26

05 Oct '26

Hello everybody! This is rather off-topic, as it doesn't directly concern TDE, so far as I can tell. However, it does concern using my Trinity colors and preferences. Does anybody have a clue what's going on? After reading about Leslie's recent upgrade, I decided that I myself had been putting off a similar upgrade. I run Devuan, so I upgraded from Daedalus to Excalibur. It was actually relatively painless, compared to doing a complete reinstallation from scratch. I dreaded rebooting, fearing that I might end up with a non-working machine, but everything looks and works practically the same as before. However ... there are yet a few glitches that I can't figure out. I am wondering if others have had issues something like these. 1. audacious won't start up. I did look up all the documentation and discussions on the forums, but they are mostly old (going back to 2007, etc.). For what it's worth, I have my audacious configured to start up after boot, which has worked seamlessly for about ten years now. I haven't changed much since then. I tried renaming these folders, tried renaming the config file, etc., but nothing helps. /home/~/.config/audacious /home/~/.local/audacious Usually, after I do this, then restart audacious, it creates new folders, and new config files. Then I just overwrite these with my own, and after that, everything is fine. This time, however, audacious won't start up at all, although it does appear as a process, briefly, in top, then disappears; and in htop it appears as a process, but does nothing, and I can only kill the process with some effort. I tried installing the plugins, codecs, etc., but thus far can't imagine what the problem may be. 2. I also have problems with qmmp. It starts up and plays just fine, but some of its behavior has changed. It's a minor annoyance, but I would like it to play the way that I had it set. Now I must do a lot more clicking to make playlist and equalizer appear or disappear; before, I would just flip from one view to another, and they disappeared or appears automatically. Before anybody makes the suggestion, I do not want to use qmmp for both online radio and for playing my local files. I have tried this before, and I prefer to stick with my own methods here, if possible, which have worked for twenty years or more. I did try out practically every other media player that might work as a substitute, but they are all inadequate in some way. Mostly, I want them to have equalization and that kind of thing, and to use Winamp skins. 3. VLC suddenly will not accept my system colors (i.e., TDE colors), but instead uses some kind of default. At least it's legible, and still plays about the same as before. But I imagine it's related to this same issue. 4. Likewise, smplayer plays the same, but now it starts up with a plain white interface, whereas before it used some kind of Gnomish-looking color scheme. In all of these cases -- and there may be others, but I haven't searched through my whole system -- one common factor is that I end up with a totally white interface (with black fonts) for menus and such. To be clear, I use my color scheme to save my eyesight, which has been giving me problems more and more with age. A white background is like torture, and within five or ten minutes, my eyes get watery, and I can't see. I've been using dark color schemes ever since the year 2000 or so, and I would like to keep it that way. At present, I really want to get audacious working again, as I usually have either qmmp playing online radio, or audacious playing music from my files. The rest, I can live with, and sort out it time. Sorry for the length. As I said, these problems all seem to be, in some way, the same underlying problem. Thanks for any help. Bill

Bug with Konqueror in 4k
by Luciano ES 24 Sep '26

24 Sep '26

Hi! I've been using Trinity for a little while and I ran into this bug in Konqueror. Are you aware of it? https://limewire.com/d/s6LpF#lNVi3J74PG It only happens in the 4k resolution. I also tested 1920x1080 and 2560×1440. It seems the problem only happens in 4k. Thanks in advance, -- Luciano ES >>

apt-get install fails when installing qpdf

kPDF says this is a password-protected PDF
by J Leslie Turriff 20 Sep '26

20 Sep '26

I downloaded three documentation PDFs for a new motherboard, but when I try to open any of them, kPDF asks for a password.* I can open them with kGhostview, but that application is quite primitive compared with kPDF. Does anyone know why this is happening, and how to get past the password prompt? You can experiment with one of the documents, which I have stored at <https://c.mail.com/@649596501445582267/Q3yZyhtyLVI29-W0bgEUZQ> Leslie *See attached images.

by Michele Calgaro 19 Sep '26

19 Sep '26

Hi all, in the last couple of months, Sebastião Guerra has been contributing very actively with lots of fixes and new features, many of which have already made it into the upcoming R14.1.7 release. The quality of his work and the positive attitude in code reviews have made him a candidate for the team and he has now accepted the invitation from the #Trinity project. Let's give him a warm welcome! It is nice to see the team growing :-) Cheers Michele

network-mananger-tde: wifi password is not saved
by Uwe Brauer 16 Sep '26

16 Sep '26

Hi all I am running Ubuntu 24.04 with `network-manager-tde 4:14.1.3-0ubuntu24.04.0+0`. When I log in using Ubuntu’s default desktop environment, I can add a new Wi-Fi connection, save the password and connect to it without any problems. However, when I do the same in TDE, I can add the new Wi-Fi connection, but when I try to save the password, I get the following error: Unable to save network connection! Potential causes: - Insufficient permissions - NetworkManager not running - DBUS failure I have also installed `polkit-agent-tde`, but this has not made any difference. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, or how I could troubleshoot it? Regards Uwe Brauer

Linking failure when trying to build Kaffeine
by mrkubax10 16 Sep '26

Hi, it's my first message here. I'm trying to build Kaffeine from source, however I ran into an issue during linking stage which results in lots of undefined reference messages to various TQt symbols. CMake seems to pick up TQt correctly so I'm kind of lost what to do next.

VLC crashes - caused by tqt-something?
by William Morder 12 Aug '26

12 Aug '26

Hello everybody! I have only recently tried streaming some online television channels using VLC, due to my discovering a couple of YUGE playlists on github. When I first loaded the playlists and started up VLC, it took a little finagling, but within 15 minutes or so I was watching public television stations (US). Then I got the bright idea to combine several of the playlists into one big playlist; same great results. I was immediately able to watch television channels from all over the planet (if they weren't geo-blocked). The only problem was that it sounded hollow, shrill and ugly, like my speakers were inside a tin can. So I made a few more adjustments, and everything was fine. More great stuff that I was discovering. Now, I am not crazy about the idea of watching television, as I don't have one any more, haven't missed it in these past few years, been reading a lot more books, and my life tends to go better without television. Still, every once in a while, I wonder what's on, if I actually had a television to watch. And besides, I can stop any time I want.... Somehow, though, don't know what happened, VLC started crashing, and now won't start up properly. Attached is a snapshot of the notification window: gtk2-tqt-engine (vlc-gtk-tqt application) seems to be the cause. I did a search of the list, as I remembered something like that (related to Open Office), and Nik advised that I remove these packages: gtk3-tqt-engine-trinity gtk2-engines-gtk-qt-trinity Slavek said it was probably the kgtk-qt3-trinity package. In any case, my result now is the same as back then (in February of 2022): "Package 'gtk3-tqt-engine-trinity' is not installed, so not removed"; the same with kgtk-qt3-trinity. If anybody has a clue how to resolve this issue, it would be a great help. As I said above, everything worked just fine without much fuss: thousands of channels, everything playing just like regular television. My only changes (so far as I recall) were to adjust the sound, equalizer, etc. Then it stopped working, and now just crashes immediately after starting. Thanks for any help ... Bill P.S. At https://engineerfix.com/how-to-tell-which-way-a-fan-is-blowing/ we are told that > "Most fans feature two distinct arrows placed along the side of the casing, which relay critical operational information." (not true in my experience) and furthermore, > "One arrow indicates the direction in which the blades rotate when the fan is powered on, which is usually a clockwise or counter-clockwise path." Partition Issue....
by CHRIS M 03 Aug '26

03 Aug '26

Well, I am back.......... I thought I was ready to give up on Trinity, but, here I am. I am on Linux Mint 22.3 with Cinnamon. I installed TDE via the directions for Ubuntu... Rebooted, NO TDE option at log in... Ran the keyring command again, and then the installation instructions, it says that TDE was already installed. Rebooted... NO TDE option at log in.. Installed Synaptic and installed TDE-BASE and VIOLA! SHE LIVES! But, now when I try to access my /DATA partition, TDE says it can't enter that partition after I enter my admin password. Is it because I formatted and set up the partition with Cinnamon's Disk Manager? How do I get the partition set up with TDE? Let me guess? 1. Unmount the partition in Cinnamon w/ Cinnamon's disk manager 2. Log into TDE 3. open TDE Disk Manager 4. Run the Take Ownership command 5. Then mount the partition in TDE? Thanks, Chris PS, This is my first time running " The NEW and IMPROVED" Trinity... Everything looks so nice and shiny.. Its very beautiful looking! It doesn't look like something from the dated past, as in like KDE 3.5!

Telling systemd fdsk to take a hike
by dep 15 Jul '26

15 Jul '26

Greets, everyone, from a place of great anguish. Sat down at the desktop machine last night and to my surprise it was off. I turned it on. As it booted, it found and fixed some orphaned inodes, per usual for a dirty shutdown (no idea what caused the shutdown, btw), and all was well, seemed to be happy, but then it got to where it said: [TIME] Timed out waiting for device dev-sdb1.device - /dev/sdb1. [DEPEND] Dependency failed for mnt-sdb1.mount - /mnt/sdb1. There it sat. It's probably worth mentioning that there is no sdb in the machine. Only a big sda partitioned into several partitions, per usual. After a while I did the c-a-d thing, but instead of rebooting it seemed to continue the boot in progress until it came to: [*** ]Job systemd-fsck@dev-disk-by\x2duuid-f33fcb46[many numbers and letters].service/stop running (4min 5s / no limit) It's not lying about the no limit -- it stayed there, counting, all night. I booted a System Rescue disk from USB. Could find no evidence of anything wrong, though that's not saying much in that I didn't really go poking around lest I *really* break something. So. Anyone know how I can tell the machine to stop looking for stuff that isn't there and just to go ahead and boot? Thanks! dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Is Trinity a non-political project?
by psudo＠atomicmail.io 15 Jun '26

15 Jun '26

A lot of GNU/linux software is discriminating primarily against conservatives and people on the political right, this unfortunately includes KDE Plasma: https://lunduke.substack.com/p/kde-attacks-critics-as-sad-people https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShmMajfj314 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QonsAQYME8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00EPajdGrdY A lot of people are looking to migrate away from KDE Plasma because of this along with them pushing a wayland-only session. Trinity is an amazing option that has nearly all the same features Plasma has with a much lighter codebase and also works with Devuan and Xlibre. So it might be a weird question but in the year 2026 I have to ask: Does Trinity accept everyone (users/contributers) regardless of background/politics/race/gender, etc so long as they write quality code and focus on making the project as great as it can be? P.S I don't mind what the politics are of those who work on Trinity, I don't need to know at all.

What is compton-tde?
by William Morder 03 Jun '26

03 Jun '26

Suddenly, just within the past week or two, definitely since I reinstalled my OS, I am seeing this thing called compton-tde running always near the top of top. It doesn't seem to do anything special or new, yet it is new to me, always to be seeing it. I thought, Well, it's been a long time since I really messed up my system, but I will fear no unknown software. So I killed the process, it disappeared, and I cannot detect any change in my system, except that compton-tde no longer appears in top. I did do a search for compton<-without-tde>, but this tells me nothing more. It does something important, one supposes, but we know not what. Bill

browser woes - RESOLVED -- and tork-trinity
by William Morder 01 Jun '26

01 Jun '26

And thanks to nobody for help on this one ... That's okay, though, as it took a bit of finagling until I got Tor Browser working more or less right. I just don't remember it being so much work, but then I haven't used it for quite a few years. In the end, I went back to the version that's current for my system, although I don't know if that was part of the cure, as I haven't tried using the sid (or unstable experimental version, or whatever it is). I thought it might be something to do with Debian and Devuan not playing well together, but the packages are in the Devuan repositories, so I don't think that was it. Anyway, I am posting my results here, just it case somebody else out there might find it useful, if they are trying to install it. As I mentioned before, for my own system, I had to run the command "firejail torbrowser-launcher"; but that's because I have firejail installed, so I have to do it with all my browsers, as well as a few other programs. If you don't use firejail, then you can ignore that bit. Once I finally got it to launch: when I tried to configure torbrowser to use proxy servers, but it would only accept the http/https configuration, 127.0.0.1:8118, which is to use privoxy. Somewhere, I believe on the Tor Project website, I read that Socks5 is the preferred configuration: 127.0.0.1:9050, and set that to be used by all protocols. But when I tried this, I couldn't connect. Somewhere or other I got the notion to try enabling the built-in bridges in the Tor Browser. I tried 'em all, off and on, the obs4, snowflake and meek, and all seem to work, but takes time, and requires patience. Eventually, using bridges, the Tor Browser connnected, and only then could I use the Socks5 configuration. Since I started doing this, my internet connection also seems much more stable, though this may be a coincidence, or not. This brings me to the point that connects it to TDE, so that this is not completely off-topic. This issue, which concerns tork-trinity, is what started all this bother. I would like to be able to continue to use tork-trinity to manage my proxy connections, as it has many features that I will miss if I try doing it manually. For one thing, I can watch all my internet traffic over proxies in real time. (And since I started using the Tor Browser, I now also see the new connections, bridges, and so on. It may be, because I use the bridges, and there always seems to be a trickle of bits/second, that it keeps my connection alive?) The problem with tork-trinity is that it's a kind of legacy package, I would guess. The KDE3 version was discarded when KDE started on its terrible campaign of transmogrification into an ugly pile of krap, and only Trinity desktop keeps it alive. However, I cannot add the most recent Tor bridges to tork-trinity. It seems that tork-trinity uses a list that is obsolete, and now they are listed in a different form. Is there some way, for the present moment, to copy those Tor bridges, that I get from the Tor Browser, and paste them into tork-trinity? tork-trinity > Settings > Configure TorK > Firewall/Censor Evasion > Evade Censorship When I click the button to use bridges My State or Service Provider Censors the Use of Tor I end up with a lot of useless bridge addresses, and it sometimes interferes a little with my connection, or so it seems. If there is no way to hack it to use the current bridges, then is it possible to modify or upgrade the tork-trinity package, so that it is up-to-date with current usage methods for the Tor bridges? I don't know how much trouble this might cause, and I realize that the developers don't have time for everything. But tork-trinity is so very useful. I feel sure others would agree, if they have used it. If necessary, I can make a feature request, or whatever is appropriate. Bill

setting up DNS servers - need help
by William Morder 01 Jun '26

01 Jun '26

Hello everybody! Lately I've been having problems connecting to various sites that I have visited and used regularly for more than 20 years. For example, I get blocked from even viewing pages on the Internet Archive (archive.org), and can only find download links by searching the onion version of DDG. Then I can usually download, using wget over Tor, though sometimes I have to wait; sometimes I have to change my useragent from nothing to something, and that helps, but I still get messages that condemn me as another "AI bot" that is "ruining the web for everybody"; although, as far as I can recall, I've been doing it like this for most of those past 20 years. Anyway, a little online research yielded the recommendations that I try entering a useragent in the appropriate place in wget; which I did, and which helps, but only sometimes. Another suggestion was that I ought to try changing my DNS servers. Most pages recommended Google's servers as the default, but I mostly have relied upon OpenDNS, when I have had time to fiddle around with such things, when I can spend enough time online. I have used OpenDNS before, so it's not unfamiliar to me. I reviewed their pages to see what has changed, and updated by settings accordingly. I edited my file (not including my own remarks in brackets) in /etc/resolv.conf like so: nameserver 208.67.222.222 nameserver 208.67.220.220 #[ipv6 redirect to ipv4] #nameserver ::ffff:d043:dede #nameserver ::ffff:d043:dcdc #nameserver ::ffff:d043:dedc #nameserver ::ffff:d043:dcde #[ipv6] # nameserver 2620:119:35::35 # nameserver 2620:119:53::53 # ipv6 - RFC compliant - no filtering # nameserver 2620:0:ccc::2 # nameserver 2620:0:ccd::2 As I have disabled ipv6 at present, you see that those lines are commented out. I will enable ipv6 again when I know more about it to adjust my firewall and security settings appropriately. Otherwise, you see above that there are addresses for ipv6 as well as to redirect ipv6 to ipv4. After changing my settings as described above, I restart nscd or sometimes even reboot, but when I check my /etc/resolv.conf, it says that my "original" settings have been restored by networkmanager: # Generated by NetworkManager search lan nameserver 10.246.172.1 I tried changing permissions to rw, but this doesn't help. As I understand it, tdenetworkmanager depends on networkmanager, which is to say Google, I believe. I went into network settings in the Trinity Control Manager (TCC > Internet & Network > Network Settings), created different profiles, and so on, but it does no good. I ended up not being able to connect to internet at all, and could not restore my original settings even though I am scrupulous about backing up before I make changes. I ended up having to reinstall my system, and now I am back in the same place; unable to connect to some sites, notably archive.org. At the moment I cannot tell if this is * a problem with my own configuration * a problem with the sites themselves (e.g., archive.org may have changed things) * a problem with the tdenetworkmanager (which has been crashing more often over the past few months) * a problem with the networkmanager that is a dependency for the tdenetworkmanager * my DNS servers are misconfigured in /etc/resolv.conf or in my network settings * a problem with my local network (over which I have no control, and which goes down a lot) * something else ... There are some other issues to discuss under other headings; not directly related to this problem or problems. I will bring those matters up separately. Any help would be greatly appreciated, so that I can be free again. Bill

browser woes - partly solved
by William Morder 31 May '26

31 May '26

Okay, so I made a little progress on the Tor Browser installation. It turns out, I have firejail installed, and I usually open my browsers (and a few other items) with a special command, e.g., "firejail firefox", etc. Thus, "firejail torbrowser-launcher" ... When I did this, I managed to get Tor Browser started, running, configured, connecting to internet, visiting web pages, all that good stuff. Except one thing: With my other browsers, I have them configured to use a Socks5 proxy, 127.0.0.1:9050. But with this Tor Browser, I must configure it to use http/https, 127.0.0.1:8118. Otherwise, I can't connect to internet. As I understand it, Socks5 is better for some reason that I now forget. If anybody knows better, I am curious what's going on here. Also, I can get bridges, sort of (they are already built-in), but when I try downloading new bridges, I get hit with a captcha question, but nothing ever appears; no images to click, no characters to enter, or what-not. So, Tor Browser is sort of working, but I can't get past the configuration. Also, when I try to change my web page colors, fonts, etc., nothing happens. I looked for where Tor Browser calls home in my system, but it's not in the usual folder, i.e., /home/<user name./.mozilla/<mozilla browser>. There is a torbrowser folder in /home/<user name>/.config/torbrowser, but it only contains a json file. I would do a little self-hacking of about:config, etc., but first, I would like to find where this stuff is kept. I usually make backups before I start messing round. Bill

browser woes
by William Morder 31 May '26

31 May '26

Okay, so on to the next step in my self-improvement program. I want to get the Tor Browser working on my machine. Indeed I have used it with no problems before, but now I can only manage to download the packages. I have tried installing the sid experimental version; tried going conservative and installing the version that is supposed to match my system (torbrowser-launcher=0.3.6-2); likewise I went primitive, and tried installing from source. After a bit of research online, I tried installing as sudo, a few obscure esoteric tricks, all to no avail. The most joy that I can get is when I tried the command tried running tdesu torbrowser-launcher, then it went through the motions of download the whole thing, but then aborted, telling me that torbrowser cannot be run as root, then it closed. I managed to untar the source packages for the current version (tor-browser-linux-x86_64-15.0.14.tar.xz) into a folder, but cannot seem to find anywhere to put it, or get it to run, or to complete installation, or whatever is the hangup. It's been a few years, but I ran the Tor Browser on a Windoze machine, ran it as a portable version from a flash drive, so I could use it sometimes on public computer, and I have run it in Linux, back in the days of KDE3.5 Hardy Heron 8.x, and again, if I recall, in an early TDE Devuan installation ... I believe sometime around Jessie? Anyway, nothing seems to work right now. I am considering building a Unabomber cabin deep in the woods, or maybe finding an empty cave up in the mountains, but then I thought, I must be missing something. I ought to give it another try. I would like to use the Tor Browser mainly to be able to download bridges, as I cannot easily do that with tork-trinity (even though it is supposed to be possible). That might be a bug, I don't know? I don't want to get a Gmail email address, nor even a RiseUp address, just to get bridges, but I may have to do that. I don't know that I actually *need* bridges, but it can't hurt, as I have been having all kinds of weird connection problems. Anybody who has a clue what is going on with Tor Browser, let me know. Thanks. Bill

Can I toggle the Active Borders setting using DCOP?

TDE with vncserver and KRdc
by deloptes 25 May '26

25 May '26

Hi, I wonder what is the best vnc tool to use with TDE? I did following experiment now: - installed a VM and installed TDE in the VM - installed vncserver - configured the user and the startup script [1] - started the server - on my PC started krdc and connected to the TDE I had some issues, but I found out that xstartup was not executable. There are still some issues with things not working (TCC crashing etc) => Again as may be 15y ago there are issues with keyboards. Buttons stop working. ALT/META key has strange behavior. I switched to vncviewer and things are much better. I can indeed work. Any ideas ... what are you using or how are you configuring both sides?

Re-maping the "Windows" key
by Thierry de Coulon 10 May '26

10 May '26

Hello all, I've got one of these nice Lenovo Thinkpad Keyboards (the old USB, wired type). Unfortunately, the one I got has the US layout but I use the Swiss layout. This mostly is solved with stickers, however many european languages use a layout with one more key (which is used for <, > and \). So this key is missing (physically). Now there is that useless "Windows" key looking at me. Can I modify TDE's Swiss Keyboard Layout to re-map that key to <>\ ? Thierry

Lost TDE programs
by Jonesy 05 May '26

05 May '26

Yikes!! I finally got past the Ubuntu DDoS and successfully updated my 24.04 machine last night -- together with updating Trinity to the new release. In that process I received the "...installed but no long needed" display containing A LARGE number of programs. I hand-checked several and it appeared that the new Trinity release was renaming trinity-<programs> to <programs>. So, nevously, I ran the "sudo apt autoremove' -- which, indeed, remove A LARGE number of programs. The system seemed ok after the update and I shut it down for the night. This morning I powered it up and soon found that `kwrite` did not exist. I checked `kate`, and it, too, was gone. Probably A LARGE number of other Trinity programs/utilities are gone, too. If I try to run "sudo apt-get install kwrite", the process wants to install a monstrous list of KDE stuff! -- which I did not do. I need advice on how to proceed and correct this. Darkness - 1. May 2026 version :) ... oops, typo in URL
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 04 May '26

04 May '26

Hi All! Sorry, here comes the correct URL ... I just finised uploading the latest version of "darkness". Biggest changes: - TDE 14.2.0-DEVELOPMENT - Xlibre 25.0.0 - new background images - kernel 7.0.3 - own repository for darkness-specific packages (ATM a package for the repo and the wallpapers) Notes: - Persistent partition at 3GB when booting the ISO from a USB stick: As long as any future ISO written to the stick is smaller than 3GB the data on the partition is unaffected. - Virtualbox/VMware guest graphics: mesa has deprecated gallium-xa. When you run inside an affected guest then xserver-xlibre-video-vmware is automatically downgraded to 13.4.0.1-2 - Laguage: TDE language packs of unused languages are removed when booting from iso, so that translations of missing texts come from english and not from any other language pack - deactivate 3D acceleration on Lenovo X61 / Intel GM965/GL960 Download: - https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501.iso - https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501.iso.sha256 Some Images: https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501-0.png https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501-1.png https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501-2.png https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501-3.png Thumbnails of all new wallpapers: https://www.klepp.cn/darkness/iso/darkness-20260501-wallpapers.png Announcement in Devuan Forum: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=63519#p63519 Please feel free to download and try .. and post your experience :D Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Wanted to install Trinity... But, I had a ton of problems
by CHRIS M 01 May '26

01 May '26

I Wanted to install Trinity... But, I had a ton of problems..... Debian 13: Fresh install, I never had the TDM log in screen, I just got dropped down to a terminal to log in. https://imgur.com/a/LTIKQCw Then, I never could get my bluetooth Alexa speaker to work to play sound. Soooo.................. I installed OpenSUSE Leap 16. And the command for one of the repos kept erroring out: http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/rpm/oss156/trinity-r14/RPMS/x8… trinity That repo kept 404'ing and saying that I need to check the repo, and to point the repo to a repo that ends in .repo, I believe the error said. So, I tried changing the "0ss156" part to "0ss160" for Leap 16.0, and that part didn't work either. *SHRUGS* Thanks, Chris chris(a)cwm030.com

Inconsistent output from the w command between Debian and openSUSE
by J Leslie Turriff 15 Apr '26

15 Apr '26

In openSUSE, in Konsole, when I issue the w command I get output like this: | @23:24:30 leslie@chestnut | wd = /home/leslie | $ w | 23:24:52 up 15 days, 10:49, 4 users, load average: 0.60, 0.59, 0.59 | USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT | leslie pts/33 192.168.1.116 21:09 9:48 0.18s 0.00s sshd: leslie [priv] | leslie pts/34 192.168.1.116 21:17 4.00s 0.03s 0.00s w | rc = 0 whereas in Debian I see: | @23:59:39 leslie@toreador | wd=/home/leslie | $ w | 23:59:52 up 23 days, 23:39, 0 users, load average: 0.16, 0.20, 0.18 | USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT | rc=0 Why is it that on Debian, the active terminals aren't listed? Also, the who commands' outputs are different, though both show the active terminal sessions. openSUSE: | @23:24:52 leslie@chestnut | wd = /home/leslie | $ who -H | NAME LINE TIME COMMENT | leslie pts/33 2026-04-14 21:09 (192.168.1.116) | leslie pts/34 2026-04-14 21:17 (192.168.1.116) | rc = 0 and Debian: | @23:59:52 leslie@toreador | wd=/home/leslie | $ who -H | NAME LINE TIME COMMENT | leslie seat0 2026-03-22 12:12 (:0) | rc=0 Why the difference? The reason I'm looking at these is that I want to find out which are remote sessions and which are using su; so the w command, which lists a session's tty name, its ip address, and whether it is privileged (at least on openSUSE; Debian seems less helpful.) [openSUSE] can't login to sole user
by Felix Miata 13 Apr '26

13 Apr '26

I just did an openSUSE Leap 16 installation on a new used PC with FM2+ AMD. Only IceWM was installed initially, then TDE, then Plasma. TDM is active DM. Plasma and IceWM sessions work normally, but for TDE for the only user, instead a popup: Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?). Check your installation. /tmp is on /, so plenty of freespace. I don't know of any other tmp directory(s). Root TDE session works fine. This is my first use of SELinux. Could it be related? If not, what would? I see no suspects in dmesg or journal. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. System tray or whatever it's called
by dep 09 Apr '26

09 Apr '26

hi, everybody . . . trying to deal with a problem with what is often called the system tray -- that little section at the right side of kicker that holds small icons that do stuff. problem is that there used to be a little protonvpn icon there what let me know when the vpn was on and when it wasn't, by a little indicator attached to the icon itself. at some point it disappeared and i cannot make it come back. i've dealt with proton tech support. sad to say, they're very good at seeming to deliver aupport without actually doing anything other than restate the obvious. so i need to dig it out myself. i have *no* idea how the system tray thing works. so i do not have the first clue in tracking it down. anybody know what's necessary to get an application to register there and do what it's supposed to do? if I have a sense of that, i can try to work backwards and sort it. thanks in advance. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

anyone here use treesheets successfully with the TDE systray?
by D. R. Evans 09 Apr '26

09 Apr '26

I've been trying, for years, to use treesheets (https://strlen.com/treesheets/) on my TDE systems, always without success: there's some weird problem with minimising to the tray, which I won't bother to describe in detail unless people want me to. I was hopeful that the recent mention of ksystraycmd might point me in the right direction, but sadly I still can't get treesheets to behave sensibly (i.e., to minimise to the tray when I close it). The treesheets author, when informed of the problem long ago, said that it was TDE's fault; but I have always been unconvinced, as no other program I have misbehaves in the same way. Anyway, I just thought I'd ask here if anyone is successfully using treesheets with the systray in TDE; if so, perhaps we can talk privately to see what you are doing differently that makes it work (I don't want to clutter the reflector unnecessarily with something that might not be a TDE issue). System tray progress, sort of
by dep 08 Apr '26

08 Apr '26

Where does one control applications to make them autostart and not autostart? Apparently for its system tray applet to work, ProtonVPN requires nm-tray to be running. Instead, the TDE Network Manager app is running and I cannot make the TDE app stop autostarting, nor get nm-tray to autostart. KControl tells me that it's in ~/.trinity/Autostart, but the only thing there is a text file named Directory that is a listing of every characterset in the solar system. And several things that aren't charactersets autostart. I don't know if this will solve the problem, but I figure it's worth a try. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

LO scalc fonts in Menu entries are very small
by Uwe Brauer 27 Mar '26

27 Mar '26

Hi all I am using a X1 Thinkpad with 14 inch screen, LO installed in Ubuntu 24.04 or LO 25 installed directly from the libreoffice website faces the same problems. The fonts in the menu entries and the formula bar for scalc are very small! I cannot find a way to enhance these fonts. When I try out the TDE Settings in Appearance-->Fonts There are a couple of options, general, fixed with, Toolbar Menu Window title Taskbar and Desktop, I set all to 12 but the LO menu fonts are still small. Any ideas what to do and who is the culprit here. Regards Uwe Brauer

Have you at various times run OO and LO on the same machine? I did this once a few years ago and got the slowdown you describe. I don't remember how I purged the machine of both, but I remember it wasn't easy. An extremely disappointing wallpaper...
by Wirlaburla 11 Mar '26

11 Mar '26

Hi folks. I was reading the release notes for R14.1.5 before I started a system upgrade and noticed there was a new wallpaper added to tdeartwork. At first, I liked it, but then I took a closer look and was extremely disappointed. Do we not have any quality control for TDE artwork? I'm certainly not the only one who noticed how bad this looks. I have no issue with using AI for artwork, but this is embarassing. There was very clearly no attempt to polish or improve this at all. How did this make it in? Surely we can do better than this, no? Thanks, Nick

tdeio_uiserver
by Mike Bird 09 Mar '26

09 Mar '26

Can anyone give me some clues about tdeio_uiserver? It appears to be a process forked but not execed from tdeinit. I've looked at what I presume is the source but there's nothing obvious to me that would use any significant amount of RAM: https://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/tdelibs/tree/tdeio/misc/uiserver.cpp The process seems to be growing without limit in TDE 14.1.5. I had not noticed such behavior in previous versions of TDE but I do use TDE very heavily and my workload changes over time. My firefox is also very large but I can restart that to get back some RAM. Restarting firefox does not reduce the size of tdeio_uiserver. Is there a signal I can send to tdeio_uiserver to tell it to downsize? I could of course reboot, or logout and login, but that costs me about twenty minutes including putting dozens of firefox windows back where they're supposed to be. Looking for adressbook snycing

Hi all, I'm currently trying to "degooglize", in particular as Google is turning Android to another closed system (no more side-loading). I've had my "contacts" (no that many) over the years on Google mail/contact because it was so easy. Now I'm trying to find a replacement that would let me manage them on the desktop and use them on the phone. Most suggested solution use webdav, but software syncing with webdav are usually thunderbird or KAdressBook (from KDE). TDE's KAdressBook does not seem to offer that. Anyone can suggest a - simple - solution? Thierry

A mail expert here?
by dep 12 Feb '26

12 Feb '26

I've been using KMail since I gave up XFMail in 1998. No particular problems, until . . . I've been using ProtonMail since 2018. There is a utility called ProtonMail Bridge that runs on the local machine and unencrypts the mail so that a standard client can be used. It has behaved especially flakily in the last year or so. I raised the issue with the Proton people, who said that it works fine with Thunderbird. Which it might. I don't know and am disinclined to find out. To use the bridge, one sets the mail client -- KMail -- to point to 127.0.0.1 and port 1143. Everything else is as though pointing to an ordinary mail server. It uses imap. I store mail in maildir format. It sends and receives mostly just fine, with a few exceptions. The first is that it frequently, though not always, lists the same message twice in my KMail inbox, with the first listing being blank and undeletable. It shows as unread. The second listing is normal in every respect. The second KMail oddity is that if I use the "mark all messages as read" option in the inbox, it marks all those messages as *unread* on my tablet and phone, which are using he native ProtonMail Android app (under GrapheneOS, no bridge required). Likewise, if I have read a message on, say, the tablet and then read the same message in KMail, it becomes unread again on the tablet. All of this us over ProtonVPN as well. So I'm trying to find out what Thunderbird does that KMail doesn't, or what KMail does that Thunderbird doesn't, and how I can set up KMail so that its behavior emulates that of Thunderbird. Any expert on mail protocols here? Thanks in advance. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Trinity thinks my phone is a camera, won't allow data file transfers.
by J Leslie Turriff 06 Feb '26

06 Feb '26

I want to copy some files from my computer to my Samsung phone. I can connect them together, and a Konqueror window opens showing the phone's storage (attachment 1), but when I try to copy a file to it, I get a message, "Writing to camera is not supported." (attachment 2). The phone has two settings for file transfers: 1) "Transfer media files to a computer via an MTP connection." 2) "Transfer images and other files via a PTP connection if MTP is not supported." Using either connection method produces the same result. Is there a way to tell Trinity that it's a phone, not a camera? Leslie

Suggestions for a tiny screen
by Thierry de Coulon 05 Feb '26

05 Feb '26

My eyes are no more what they were, however I've always likes the idea to run Linux on a tiny thing (got some Sharp Zaurus) and I've purchased a (second hand) GPD Pocket (I thing I got the idea from a post on this list). OK, so I've installed my favourite MX-Linux (and TDE) on it. However, the 1200x1920 screen has very tiny pixels and the setup is quite uneasy (with magnifying glass sometime), so before I poke everywhere to try, maybe someone here âlready went through sometiing like that and could suggest settings that work. I notices that TCC lists the sceen as "Philips PHL 273V7" but Internet search suggests it's a 27" monitor.... I would: Scaling? Can we do that in TDE? And this machine won't stand KDE (neither would I). xfce did a little better, not much. Change the screen size? I'd like to try something like 600x960 but nothing such is offered by TCC Thierry

Its installer doesn't create an icon in the Kicker menu, but using the Menu Editor, I can create one "manually;" but though I can use it to launch jEdit, TDE doesn't notice that it is running when I log out of my session and doesn't restore it when I log back in. I notice that if I right-click on the icon in my panel and select Configure jEdit Button and then in the Application tab, click on Advanced Options, an undocumented selector called DCOP registration with choices None (default), Multiple Instances, Single Instances, and Run Until Finished. Could this be a way to make TDE aware when this application is running so that it can restore it when a new session is started? Leslie

Need some help with kmail regexp filters
by J Leslie Turriff 28 Jan '26

28 Jan '26

I'm trying to filter some semi-constant noise from the subject fields of mail items in a subfolder, but I can't get my filter to work. Clearly, I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but I can't see what. Here are some examples of Subject fields: SUSE-SU-2026:0245-1: Security update for php7 openSUSE-SU-2026:10079-1: python311-weasyprint-68.0-1.1 on GA media and here is the filter that doesn't work (quoted to show where there are spaces): "(open)?SUSE-SU-[0-9]{4,4}: ?[0-9]{1,5}-[0-9]{1,2}: " which kregexp interprets as: Repeated at Most 1 Time: "open" "SUSE-SU-" Repeated Exactly 4 Times: One of the following Characters: from 0 to 9 ":" Repeated at Most 1 Time: " " Repeated From 1 to 5 Times: One of the following Characters: from 0 to 9 "- " Repeated From 1 to 2 Times: One of the following Characters: from 0 to 9 ": " What am I overlooking/misunderstanding here? openSUSE Leap 16.0 and TDE
by Gianluca Interlandi 27 Jan '26

27 Jan '26

Dear TDE users, I was wondering whether anyone has installed openSUSE 16.0 along with TDE. What is your experience so far (in particular with openSUSE 16.0)? Does openSUSE 16.0 still support RPM? Choose logout choices
by Thierry de Coulon 25 Jan '26

25 Jan '26

Hello all, I am configuring an old UpBoard (SBC) with Trinity as Desktop. I plan that this machine will be used by people who know little (or nothing) about Linux and maybe even computers. The point is: when I right-click the desktop and choose "logout", I get a lot of possibilities: Logout, Shutdown, Restart, Freeze, Suspend, Hibernate and Hybrid suspend. I'd like to have only the three first ones. Would removing TDEPowersave do that (Powersave is no use as this SBC does not have any battery)? Or is there any otherway to configure that (maybe in TDM, as running with lightdm offered only "logout")? Thierry

Lou Gerstner has shuffled off this mortal coil. "The CEO misread consumer and business enthusiasm for PCs, allowing Compaq and Dell to overtake the market it pioneered, and Microsoft to dominate the market for PC operating systems to the extent that IBM gave up on OS/2. . . . IBM also lost leadership in networking, storage, processor design, and saw x86 servers drive its mainframe and midrange business into niche markets." Kmail apostrophe weirdness
by Leslie Turriff 03 Dec '25

03 Dec '25

Lately I've been seeing this weird spacing effect with apostrophes in incoming emails. The encoding for the messages in question is "auto-detected" by Kmail as UTF-8, and in the message headers announce that they are UTF-8. Is this some artifact of the sending agent, or something that Kmail is doing? I attach an example. kmail update trouble
by Thierry de Coulon 01 Dec '25

01 Dec '25

Hi all, I had some spare time available so I decided to do a dist-upgrade (MX-Linux 23, TDE on psb). Now habve 14.1.6 ~development (and the latest MX 23, whatever it's called). Now, I can't start kmail anymore - this is sent from the older MX 21 install. The error message is: kmail: error while loading shared libraries: libgpgme++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory libgpgme++.so.5 is a link to libgpgme++.so.5.0.0 in /opt/trinity/lib Bug? Workaround?

I'd love if certain Plasma features would be ported
by rave002＠o2.pl 30 Nov '25

30 Nov '25

Nothing that will go against Trinity's philosophy (I don't want to lose this lightweight DE either and I don't want another plasma), but stuff like: - An option to use kwin-x11 as a window manager as well as configuring kwin effects (wobbly windows, etc.) so using an outdated compiz or beryl/emerald is not needed to have cool stuff. - Desktop notifications for applications that integrate with Plasma's notification system. - Kdeconnect capability to integrate with mobile phones. - A visual tablet configuration window, even if it's just a wrapper for xsetwacom. May add more later on if I think of something that wouldn't go against Trinity's philosophy, but would be useful to have.

by rave002＠o2.pl 29 Nov '25

[Bug] Panel can't be set to autohide, because then it can't be brought back by moving mouse to the screen edge
by rave002＠o2.pl 24 Nov '25

24 Nov '25

So, when you set up a panel to autohide after certain amount of time (doesn't matter if it's the main panel or additional, user-made one) and check "bring back when user moves mouse" (the checkbox that lists all the different variations where mouse could be moved to bring back the panel, like upper-left screen corner, left edge, bottom edge, etc.) after clicking apply and letting the panel hide, moving mouse to the selected edge does nothing and the panel becomes completely inaccessible. I have to manually hide panels with buttons, because otherwise I can't bring it back. No idea if it's the right place to bring bugs like that, just wanted to let you know as I've decided to main TDE from now on (so expect more reports like that, sadly can't contribute any code to fix those as I am not confident enough to write a good code and also I don't have a second machine to test stuff on).

TDM "greeter screen" location(s) non-themed
by Felix Miata 22 Nov '25

22 Nov '25

With two or three displays, sometimes the login panel shows up on one screen only, but on others, it may be two, or may be three. Is there something in tdmrc that I'm missing about GreeterScreen=, or not understanding (near top of file) that can control how many on which greeter appears? Absent a specific GreeterScreen= setting, typically either the lowest resolution screen seems to acquire focus, or first choice goes to connection using the oldest technology (1VGA>2DVI>3HDMI>4DP) if not more than one having it. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Why I've decided to fully switch to TDE
by rave002＠o2.pl 22 Nov '25

22 Nov '25

Plasma got so bad over the years that when I switched to Linux over a year ago (switched september 2024, over a year before Win10 EOL) I didn't feel any different. Apps still took a minute or so to open, the entire desktop was laggy AF, the mouse cursor itself kept freezing (literally the same thing I experienced on Windows on the same machine), and yes, it happened both on Wayland and X11, so I can't even blame Wayland for that one. And the time it takes from the login screen to the functional desktop is enormous. Trinity (and pretty much all other DEs, maybe except GNOME which is trash anyway so it's okay) on the other hand is lightning fast and very functional. I don't even know where KDE did go so wrong, because I remember using KDE4 in ~2010-2014 (when I used Linux last time) and it was fast and functional, even with all graphical additions, animations, etc. and plasma desktop with plenty of plasmoids, on much weaker hardware (Geforce 9600, yes, it was before GTX was a thing, Core2Quad Q9450, 4GB RAM). Plasma has basically two speed settings: Fast (right after installation, don't touch anything and not customize a thing) and laggy AF after even the slightest bit of customization. TDE has much more reasonable resource requirements.

strange things happening ...
by William Morder 22 Nov '25

22 Nov '25

Apologies if this is post is not specific to TDE; but honestly, I don't know what to make of it. I said awhile back that my system seems to be getting unstable, though I cannot determine the causes. This has been happening more frequently over the past year or more ... ever since I mentioned that we had some flooding here (last winter?), and it seemed to affect our network here in this building. (I ought to add, if it is not evident, that I have no control over the network; my complaints too many to repeat here, and may not be related.) I am still in the process of moving, so I don't have a lot of time to spend chasing down bugs, if that's what this is; I keep hoping that these issues will resolve themselves with a system upgrade. We have stretches of a week or two where the network seems fine, then out of the blue, suddenly my machine starts freezing up any time I have a network connection; sometimes, indeed, the open connection is there and available, but I have not actually logged into the network. Usually I disable the network if I am not using it, but when I first boot up, the network is always there and available. And sure enough, my machine freezes up. I just went through this earlier today: when I went online to check my email first thing this morning, it wasn't more than five minutes and the machine froze up; I waited more than half an hour, then decided to do a hard shutdown, and boot up again. Then, as soon as I booted up and got into the Trinity desktop, the same thing happened, and the system froze up. (I wasn't online, just that the network was available.) At last, it seemed that the machine recognized mouse movement, and I somehow got it running more or less normally again. My mouse icon showed a kind of crosshair icon, which is not actually available to my mouse; so I was a bit puzzled about that. Then, once I got into my working desktop, started setting up, I noticed that some autostart programs had not started,: audacious, for example, had to be started manually. Also, tdenetworkmanager crashed, and lately has been crashing rather a lot. After all was set up and I was getting into my work, I noticed in my home folder 5 plaintext files (or at least, they seem to be text files); they are named: builtins getopt locale signal sys -- but they have no content. It may be that they are some different kind of file; the system just tells me that they are empty documents. Nothing like this has ever happened before, and I am concerned about these strange manifestations of files, apparently without any doing on my part. They have rw-r-r permissions, under my user name; which to me indicates that they are supposed to be files that the system must be able to read. For my personal stuff, which the system doesn't need to read, I make the permissions rw only under my user name. If anybody can offer some insights, of suggestions about how to unravel this mystery, I would be grateful. Bill P.S. I just did a system upgrade. I am still running Devuan Daedalus, waiting for the next LTS release, whatever and whenever that will be.

[Bug] Mouse scroll becomes intermittently inoperative in Firefox for some weird reason
by rave002＠o2.pl 22 Nov '25

22 Nov '25

The reason I say intermittently is because there's a workaround for when the mouse scroll stops scrolling in Firefox and it's... kinda weird. You first need to switch to another app where mouse scroll still works (or launch one), in my case I use Telegram for that as this is what my family uses to communicate with each other, scroll there for a bit, then alt-tab back to Firefox and the mouse scroll suddenly works. And yes, you have to scroll in the other app, otherwise when you alt-tab back to Firefox (using the newest 145 here), the scroll still won't work otherwise. Pretty weird.

A decoration/button style where user could provide their own images instead of relying on the built-in ones?
by rave002＠o2.pl 21 Nov '25

21 Nov '25

So basically each style and window decoration has their own internal images to use as button backgrounds, title bar background, etc. How about developing one that could let user supply their own image overrides that would be loaded from the mass storage for fully skinnable environment. Basically what I am asking for is something like Auroae/Kvantum, but actually performant and with ability to create custom themes visually. Such universal decorator/widget theming engine would make it possible to create new themes without writing any new code or even recompiling existing one. And no, I don't have the skills (or time) to develop it myself, otherwise I wouldn't be making this post.

ibus issues
by Daniel Wilkins 18 Nov '25

18 Nov '25

Hi y'all, retrying trinity with the new release and I'm having some problems: I'm studying Japanese, which means that I'm running ibus in order to switch keyboard layouts between English and Japanese. I've noticed that in Discord (and a the moment I can find no other examples,) it doesn't work, the keyboard layout refuses to change in Discord itself, and my shortcut keys for switching between hiragana and katakana don't work. I've never had a problem with this in other desktop environments, I've also never had any problems with it while using a plain wm such as ice or even older ones like amiwm. Is there some sort of legacy international input going on in TDE which might interfere with how ibus works? This is on slackware 15.0 using 14.1.5 from the Ray-V tde-slackbuilds. Thanks, Danny

MX-25 + TDE remix available
by Thierry de Coulon 17 Nov '25

For those interrested, MX-Linux 25 (based on Trixie) is out and I have produced a new respin including TDE. As previously, MX-snapshot requires lightdm/xfce to work, so you get an xfce installer, but TDE (from psb) is installed, you "just have" to choose TDE at login and - if you want - use tdm instead of lightdm. The archive includes a readme. Size is 4.4 GB and the download link is: https://mega.nz/file/0jolRCjJ#_h9CFQoJBO4nVc37FedFSrvJLEh2QKM47XBUqDtdVkY Thierry

Hibernate works on "bookworm" but not on "trixie"

HIbernate from TDE-Powersave locks the screen but bothing more. From the cli pm-hibernate does *not* work (nothing happens, no error message). Hibernate from TDE powersave locks the screen, then powers down. Resuming goes back to the locked screen and then restores the desktop correctly. MX-23 has sysvinit and systemd installed but not activated, MX-25 has either sysvinit (my case ) or systemd. Can this be an explanation? Thierry

IBM/Lenovo Laptop brightness issue
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 12 Nov '25

12 Nov '25

Hi all! Could some owners of IBM and Lenovo laptop plese test these 2 things: - decrease brightness < 50% - try to increase brightness too 100% - decrease brightness to 0% - try to increase brightness too 100% On my test laptops with AMD I cannot increase the brightness to > 50% when I dimmed it to < 50%. When on 0% it can only be increased to ~ 5%. I think it also affects newer intel models > T480, but I'm not sure. IMO the NVRAM layout changed and I try to figure out which model are affected and which are not. Thanks, guys!

I'm running R14.1.5~[DEVELOPMENT] here entirely happily. As a habit I don't run deep-in-the-woods versions, nor the urban tenement release versions, but the in-between, nice-place-in-the-suburbs-with-a-tree-lined-yard almost-ready versions of both Debian and TDE. As a result, a new release is pretty much already on my machine when it is released. And everything just works, with the exception of the desktop crashing at launch occasionally. (Everything works even then, just no wallpaper of the sort that has caused so much consternation -- solution: use a different wallpaper if wallpaper is your thing -- or in my case xplanet with realtime moon image, and no rmb menu on the desktop.) Logging out and back in usually fixes even that, which I think may be a dispute with Enlightenment, which I also keep on the machine. I should note that during the development of 14.1.5 I've gotten the worls in progress and none of them has been troublesome, so the developers are really good about catching things before they get into the wild. A side benefit, both is Debian and in TDE is that using the not-quite-ready version means that version upgrades are non-events, because I do update-upgrade at least once a week. Then again, I don't have multiple virtual desktops, just two monitors that are seen by XRandR as one 1920x2160 desktop. This could be due to my high-tech, modern, NVidia GeForce GT 1030 vid card and incredible AMD FX-8350 chip that I've only had for I think 11 years. But now I see here that I must worry about a wallpaper that apparently resides somewhere on this machine that it appears someone doesn't like. Because it makes me have to think back and try to remember if I have ever, even once since the July 1998 release of KDE-1.0, I've ever used a wallpaper at all, and except for a screenshot for Practical KDE in 1999 I don't think I have. All of which is to say, Thanks, devs! You do great work. Damn near flawless in my experience! -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

There being OS/2 veterans here, this might ring a bell. I never did anything this awful, though I did once run up a $700 bill the month my favorite BBS subscribed to RIME. Still have my U.S. Robotics HST-Dual Standard modem, too. What a joy it was to use! https://www.theregister.com/2025/11/10/who_me/?td=rt-3a dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

cursors changed since installing trixie... how to edit/revert?
by D. R. Evans 09 Nov '25

09 Nov '25

Since upgrading to trixie a few days ago, I keep being annoyed by a cosmetic change: some cursors have changed in a manner that I find both mystifying and annoying. I can't find any kind of cursor editor thingy in the TDE control panel (perhaps I'm missing something obvious?). How do I go about either manually editing cursors, or, probably better, telling the system: "in this situation use cursor Y instead of the cursor X that you're currently using"? A couple of examples of changes that I find particularly annoying: (i) hovering over a ratings star in clementine now changes the cursor from a northwest-pointing arrow to a northeast-pointing finger; (ii) hovering over a checkbox in basket, the cursor (which I think used to be a northwest-pointing arrow) is now a left-pointing finger. Update problem on bullseye
by Thierry de Coulon 09 Nov '25

09 Nov '25

I've got an older laptop running MX-21 (bullseye based) with TDE (14.1.1 at the time). It's no more used every day and I don't want to upgrade MX or debian (at least for the time), bullseye is OK. I just wanted to update, but running apt update throws an error for TDE: KeyError: 'deps-r14' (the error message is longer but I don't know if it's useful to display here), The lines in tde.list (for psb) are exactly the same as thoses I have for my main install (except that one is running on bookworm). It's not really important as I can perfectly use 14.1.1 on that laptop, just wondering what's the explanation of this error.

When Klicker stops working...
by Leslie Turriff 09 Nov '25

09 Nov '25

Once in a while, Kicker stops working. (See attached Klicker1.png; I place my panels on the left and right side of the screen.) Thinking that it had crashed, I tried to restart it (See Klicker2.png), but it's still running, as I realized, seeing that the applets still appear in the main panel. Can I just kill and restart it from the command line? Leslie -- Platform: Linux Distribution: openSUSE Leap 15.6 - x86_64 Desktop Environment: Trinity Qt: 3.5.0 TDE: R14.1.4 tde-config: 1.0

TDE and starting program when logging in
by D. R. Evans 08 Nov '25

08 Nov '25

Well, this is embarrassing... Sometime, long, long ago, I somehow configured TDE so that when I log in, it automatically starts yakuake on my desktop. I now want to change the binary that is executed (I have multiple versions installed, and just want to switch to a different version of yakuake). But I can't see where I am telling TDE to run yakuake, so that I can change the command to use a different binary. I've flailed around on the web, trying to discover all the places where I might have put the command that tells TDE to run yakuake. https://www.trinitydesktop.org/faq/configure.php#idm140487997734752 says that there are "several" ways to start a program on log-in, but then lists only two, and it seems neither of those two are the one that is causing yakuake to run. So suggestions as to where I might look to see where I have this configured would be much appreciated. Doc -- Web: http://enginehousebooks.com/drevans
